The vaccination campaign in the United States is proceeding apace and everyone is beginning to think about a return to normalcy. According to reliable sources, By mid-May, the country will reopen its borders (and will therefore allow Americans to travel abroad and Europeans to come to the States). But what will tourism in the United States look like? What will be the rules to be followed? New President Biden's direction seems clear.

What tourism in the United States will look like according to Biden

In this article:

The White House has given an important update, stating that the Biden administration has decided to Not to impose the vaccine for tourism in the United States nor for other activities. In fact, the issue is quite debated. It is at the center of political and economic battles, but it is also about human rights and freedoms, with threats of legal action raining down from all sides. The theme, after all, is always the same: the vaccination passport.

As Europe worked out the final details on the Green Pass, America seemed determined not to introduce anything to avoid having first-class and second-class citizens. However, New York had announced a state vaccination certificate (the Excelsior Pass): a QR code provided through a blockchain, which is essential in order to resume even the most "critical" activities (flights, stadium, cruises). For tourism in the United States, however, Biden seems determined to go his own way: the government will not issue any passports, and will not keep a database of vaccinated citizens. Instead, the issue will be dealt with by the private sector.

The important thing, authorities said, is that access to a possible vaccine passport is fair. And that the document can be obtained even by those who are not familiar with technology, or do not have an Internet connection at home. That is why the various agencies are thinking about a passport both paper and digital.

Andy Slavitt, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has spoken out on the subject of vaccine passports. So did Jen Psaki, White House press secretary. "We expect that the study and launch of the vaccine passport., or whatever you want to call it, Are led by the private sector" Psaki said. "Our efforts will focus on establishing guidelines. There are a couple of principles we are working on. The first aspect is that there will be no federal database of vaccinated people and no one will be forced by the government to vaccinate. Secondly, we want different private and nonprofit companies to get involved to look at solutions."

Not least because there are currently as many as 16 such initiatives in the field. Not only New York has moved in this direction, but also the World Health Organization, the IATA (with its Travel Pass) and numerous companies such as Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce. These, partnering with the Mayo Clinic, are working on the so-called "Vaccine Credentials Initiative."

What will tourism in the United States look like, then? We will only find out in the coming weeks.
