It is true we are always in the heart of a pandemic, Covid-19 has severely affected airlines and the entire travel world however this experience in the Lufthansa lounge at Newark Airport, which is the second intercontinental airport for the New York area after JFK, was really sad.
The lounge
In this article:
The hall is located in Terminal B of the New Jersey airport, between gates 60/68, is used by all companies in the German group flying over this airport. We have recently talked about this lounge because Lufthansa has decided to also open access to Priority Pass cardholders, in addition to the already scheduled premium passengers, the elites of the Miles and More program and to all owners of a Star Alliance elite status.
I visited this lounge on my way back from a business trip to the United States before boarding an Austrian flight to Vienna. The lounge was completely empty, as was my flight.
In addition to the sadness of seeing such a deserted airport, there was added discouragement at a lounge, immaculate and fragrant, but deserted. What surprised me, for the worse, however, was the fact that it offered nothing but seats and bottles of water.
The buffet counter was relentlessly empty, in case of a sudden hunger attack just some pretzels and chips and nothing more. No QR code with which to order from the menu, as is the case in other lounges e.g. the Sky Club of Delta in Miami or Atlanta. Of course, I did not expect an experience similar to That which can be had in Frankfurt, but even at Belgrade you get better service than this lounge.
The hall is spacious and adequate for the traffic that Lufthansa and its subsidiaries have at this airport. Unfortunately United (which is LH's partner in Star Alliance) flies from Terminal A, otherwise I'm sure the situation would have been decidedly different.
Everything was sealed, even the tap for beer and soft drinks. No attendants in the hall, only one at the entrance to control access and nothing more.
In conclusion
I understand the choice to open to Priority Pass holders, but this lounge offers nothing at all, might as well close and hand elite passengers a voucher to eat/drink something at one of the food outlets present at the airport just as Emirates does.
