Portugal joins the roster of countries looking to May as the month of reopenings. Concrete programs need to be implemented for the summer season so that the tourism sector can be revived.
In this article:
Doors open from Monday, May 17. The country authorizes foreign travel to European destinations, while allowing the Return of "non-essential" tourism. In this case, reference is made to travelers from theEuropean Union, from the United Kingdom and Schengen area countries, albeit with some limitations.
Can Italians fly to Portugal?
Can Italian tourists confidently book their vacations to Portugal for summer 2021? The answer is yes, and it applies to mainland locations as well as islands. Italy is on the list of countries with which leisure travel has been officially reopened, alongside:
- European Union countries
- United Kingdom
- Schengen area countries-Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland
However, it is not an indiscriminate "free all." Portugal also makes a distinction among the indicated countries. Indeed, it is necessary to boast a number of infections equal to or less than 500 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days (Italy has, to date, 322,891 positives, down by 5,991, with a positivity rate of 2.9%).
Each individual traveler must provide the negative result of a PCR test and then access the mainland regions or Portuguese islands. Here are what guidelines you need to follow:
- It is mandatory to fill out the "Passenger Location Card" (an operation that can be done online), in order to facilitate the tracking work of the Portuguese government
- In case of travel to Madeira or the Azores, it is mandatory to fill out the "Regional Health Authority". This is an epidemiological survey to control access to the islands. An operation to be carried out between 12 and 48 hours prior to departure
- Passengers from Brazil, South Africa, Cyprus, Croatia, France, India, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden must register their details at the following site: travel.sef.pt, agreeing to undergo a 14-day quarantine period after arrival
What to know
A clear signal of reopening by Portugal, which has no mandatory quarantine period for passengers from many countries, including Italy. The main "hurdle" to overcome is the negative PCR test, which has now become a well-known constant.
Undergoing this procedure is mandatory. No one can be said to be excluded, which leads to the topic of the vaccinated. The number of Italian citizens inoculated with the first and second dose is steadily growing. The Portuguese government, however, still does not provide for "lighter" attitudes for such individuals. Therefore, they too must undergo the PCR test in order to gain access to the mainland or islands.
It can be said how the negative swab, to be taken within 72 hours of departure, is the only real form of active control, except for some countries, previously mentioned, for which quarantine is required.
As of May 1, Portugal is out of the state of emergency. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has announced that he has no intention of renewing it. Words dating back more than two weeks, which set the tone for a convinced reopening.
The measures currently in place are significantly less stringent, making it possible to plan a vacation with great peace of mind. The incidence is about 70 cases per 100,000 population, with the lowest Covid-19 prevalence rate in Europe.
