The airline founded by the histrionic Michael O'Leary has announced new routes for the winter season from Genoa, hinting at the possibility that from the 2022 summer season the Ligurian airport could become a new base.
On Cristoforo Colombo Ryanair has been flying since 1999, but never before has the possibility of strong growth been seen in the Ligurian capital. In addition to Malta, new routes for the summer season will be Brindisi, Bucharest, Brussels, and Catania. For a total of 9 routes and 22 weekly flights, with the goal of reaching 400 thousand passengers a year from the current 150,ooo.
Specifically, in Italy it will fly to Bari and Naples (twice a week) and to Brindisi, Catania and Palermo (three times a week). The routes abroad, however, will be to Malta, Bucharest and Brussels Charleroi (twice a week) and London Standset (three times a week).
On the sidelines of the press conference, Ryanair's commercial direct reiterated its interest in the former Alitalia's assets, namely slots, but declined to say whether the Irish carrier would be interested in the auction for the Alitalia brand. News that could bring a sigh of relief to the newco ITA which in the coming weeks will have to define all open lots and participate in the various auctions to grab, in addition to the Alitalia brand, the AZ code and the 055 that identifies the tickets issued by the Italian airline.
"We are very careful on the Alitalia dossier, the EU competition laws are very clear on what the new ITA will have to do and what it cannot do. We are the real Italian carrier with over 1,000 routes between domestic and European and we aim to get back to carrying lots of passengers. On the contrary, thanks to our Gamechanger, we will have more seats on board on our flights, we will pollute less, we will save fuel, and we will be able to guarantee the lowest fares at all times," McGuinnes concluded.
