Do you love sipping good champagne aboard the plane, drinking wine and beer while eating at high altitude? There's bad news. American Airlines will not serve alcohol until Jan. 18, 2022, the day when the requirement to wear a face mask on means of transportation will lapse.

"We are doing everything we can to help create a safe environment for our crew and passengers on board our aircraft," the airline said in a note circulated to employees.

At first, American Airlines had suspended alcohol sales for the summer. And it had planned to resume service on Sept. 13, the day the in-flight mask requirement was supposed to lapse. However, complicit in the slowdown of the vaccination campaign and the rise in infections, the Transportation Security Administration announced that it was extending the mandate until Jan. 18 "To minimize the spread of Covid-19 on public transportation".

    From alcohol to masks

The major U.S. airline had already taken action in the past to curb alcohol sales at airports (trying to counteract unwise behavior on board).

Beyond the pandemic, then, the star carrier has long been making decisions against the consumption of in-flight alcohol and on the ground. It was a decision prompted by the behavior of tipsy passengers who have created quite a few problems for stewardesses, stewards and other passengers over the years. Especially now, when wearing a mask on board is a must, and arguing with a customer who is impaired by alcohol and determined not to wear it can make things even more complicated.

Especially since the United States takes this obligation very seriously. The Federal Aviation Administration has issued fines of $531,545 against 34 passengers who refused to wear masks, struck flight attendants and even threw luggage into the cabin. Not only that, based on 3,900 reports, authorities opened 692 investigations for possible violations of federal laws. And, the requirement to wear a face mask in airplanes is a federal law.

As well as American Airlines, therefore, many airlines have suspended alcohol sales for the first time in spring 2020. The goal? Minimize interaction between crew and passengers and ensure safer flights.

    Passengers enraged by masks

The web is full of amateur videos depicting passengers throwing a fit, refusing to wear a face mask. One of the most sensational stories dates back to last May 23 when a woman, on board the flight Southwest Airlines from Sacramento to San Diego, he broke two teeth of a stewardess by punching her. In July, however, an American Airlines flight bound for the Bahamas. did not take off due to a group of passengers refusing to wear masks, forcing everyone to stay the entire night in the Charlotte Douglas airport. Not even Italians are "immune." One woman, aboard a flight Ryanair from Ibiza to Milan, she starred in a video that went viral in which she railed against the stewardesses who forced her to wear a mask. The result? A 400 euro fine and a less than appreciative figure.
