Visit after visit I become more and more a fan of the Moxy style, this sign belongs to the Marriott group and I must say that it is a perfect mix for a hotel that winks at young people with always design solutions.
In this article:
If you are looking for a solution where you can sleep in proximity to Amsterdam airport, one is spoiled for choice. There are dozens of hotels, belonging to major chains and beyond, connected to Schiphol Plaza and within walking distance or by shuttle bus.
In this case, to get to Moxy Amsterdam you have to take the hotel shuttle.
You exit the airport and turn right. You continue past the cab stands and, past the pedestrian bridge that leads directly to the Sheraton, you reach the A9/13 stops.
This is the area where the various shuttles stop, there are general shuttle buses that take a fixed route and visit a number of hotels, and then there are shuttles dedicated to individual hotels. In the case of the Moxy, the shuttle is shared with the NH hotel, which is right across the street from the Marriott group hotel.
The day before arrival at the hotel you receive directions via e-mail on how to get to the hotel from the airport, in fact there is a shuttle every 30 minutes in the middle hours and one per hour during the night. Â The trip to/from the airport takes less than 10 minutes, and the shuttle unloads guests in front of the hotel entrance.
Reservation
Needing to spend one night in Amsterdam, or rather less than 12 hours between the landing of my flight and the takeoff of the next one, I chose to stay in the airport area.
As mentioned, there are so many solutions, with hotels belonging to the major chains. In the end I chose Moxy because I really like the style of this sign and the price, one night for less than 80 euros including shuttle to/from the airport, was perfect.
Of course, I booked through the APP and Taking advantage of my Gold status, a free benefit linked to American Express Platinum, I was able to take advantage of a discounted rate and a bonus of 250 Bonvoy points.
Location and check-in
We are talking about hotels in the airport area, so as written several times they are facilities designed for the overnight guest, sometimes a few hours. The hotel is only a few minutes from the airport, has ample parking and also several electric charging stations.
All the hotels in this chain have a very design-oriented focus, iconic is the fact that, in almost all Moxy hotels, the reception and bar are often in one room.
As soon as one enters this hotel, one thus discovers a climbing wall just beyond the door. Also to the right, before you even get to the bar/reception there are other designer common areas, the gym and a small area designed for children and called Library.
Language and check-in methods are geared toward a younger clientele, although the hotel is frequented by guests of all ages.
The room
There are not many room types in the Moxy, the main difference being the presence of two beds or a single king bed.Â
As a Marriott Bonvoy Gold, however, I received a small upgrade to a more spacious room on the third floor of the facility.
The "hanging" bed is another of the Moxy's distinguishing signatures, as is the rooms' essential, minimalist decor.
The shape of the room was "strange," partly because my 343 was located in the tower connecting the two wings of the hotel.
The bathroom, small and equipped with a shower, was perhaps the least nice thing about the room. I appreciate the decision not to provide single-serving products, but handouts that save on the amount of single-use plastic in the room.
Otherwise mega smart TVs with the ability to stream their own devices and wi-fi.
Comfortable bed but little choice of pillows, considering that this is a very competitive rate it may fit. The room is fairly soundproof, although, I must admit, being an airplane junkie I probably don't hear the annoyance of traffic noise outside the facility.
Breakfast
Unfortunately, due to Covid, the hotel's rooftop terrace was not operational. Too bad, it would certainly have allowed even more people to appreciate the spectacle of the hustle and bustle of the Dutch stopover.
The dining room is on the ground floor, a small buffet available to guests with products that focus heavily on a healthy breakfast, without too much choice but with sufficient offerings.
In addition, the staff offers to order eggs and pancakes that are freshly prepared.
Services
Of the climbing wall we have written, there is a small gymnasium also on the second floor.
On the opposite side is a small work area and a kids zone.
The restaurant room can also serve as a game room since there is a table that also becomes a ping pong court and a nice table soccer at the occasion.
In addition to this, plenty of space to work in peace and quiet
In conclusion
Moxy Amsterdam is definitely not for those who plan to visit the Dutch capital for tourism, however, if you arrive late at night or leave early in the morning, it can definitely be a perfect choice to sleep near the airport and spend much less than you would in downtown Amsterdam.
Pro
- The design
- The free shuttle that takes you to the hotel in 5 minutes
Against
- It is not runway view, you can only hear the noises
- The terrace could have been open given the sunny day
