Finding one's way through the maze of information regarding this event, which will attract thousands of visitors from all over the planet and will undoubtedly be the catalyzing event of the next six months, is certainly not easy. Here then all information useful to learn more about Expo 2020 in Dubai.
Expo 2020 Dubai: dates, venue and theme
Dubai's universal exposition, or Expo 2020, will kick off next October 1, 2021, and will run until the March 31, 2022, held entirely within the new exhibition area adjacent to Al Maktum International Airport, halfway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the two major cities in the United Arab Emirates.
The ultra-modern Dubai Trade Center is built around Al Wasl Square, the heart of Expo 2020. The name refers to the city's historic Arabic name, the meaning of which is "connection." And just connections and the future will be the central theme of the event (under the slogan "Connecting minds, creating the future.") which, after being postponed due to the pandemic, happens to take place in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee of the nation, which gained its independence from the United Kingdom in December 1971.
The Expo Dubai area will be easily accessible for any visitor arriving from abroad directly at the airport. There is the possibility of staying in the opulent Rove Expo 2020 Hotel, located within the exhibition area. But for those staying elsewhere, it will be possible to use the subway, with a new stop built especially for the World's Fair.
Connections and the future: the heart of Expo Dubai
Six months of meetings, conferences and events that will revolve around the themes of environmental sustainability and respect for cultural heritage, ranging from technological innovation to entertainment. During Expo 2020, it will also be possible to attend concerts, art exhibitions, cultural festivals and performances of various kinds, and of course culinary events.
This will be organized in a pathway through thematic weeks, according to a precise schedule that will affect all pavilions of the exhibition:
- Climate and biodiversity (October 3-9, 2021)
- Space and new frontiers (October 17-23, 2021)
- Urban and rural development (October 31-November 6, 2021)
- Tolerance and inclusiveness (November 14-20, 2021)
- Knowledge and learning (December 12-18, 2021)
- Travel and connectivity (January 9-15, 2022)
- Global goals (January 16-22, 2022)
- Health and Wellness (January 27-February 2, 2022)
- Food, agriculture and livelihoods (Feb. 17-23)
- Water (March 20-26, 2022)
Italy's pavilion
Of course, Italy will also be featured at Expo Dubai 2020: in addition to the singer Andrea Bocelli, one of the international stars who will open the opening ceremony, our country will have its own pavilion within the fair, designed by Carlo Ratti, Italo Rota, Matteo Gatto and F&M Ingegneria, and will organize several events, all linked by the slogan "Beauty Unites People.".
Characterizing Italy's presence at the event will be an exhibition route with installations related to the themes of innovation and sustainability. The Italian experience in Dubai is presented with 10 different formats. The first, in the opening week of the exhibition, will be focused on Venice, with the submission of the bid for World Sustainability Capital.
Among the big names of our country's culture present in the UAE, it is worth mentioning the director Gabriele Salvatores, author of a film celebrating Italy's artistic and scenic heritage; the conductor Riccardo Muti, who will direct the first staging of the Nabucco of Giuseppe Verdi in the Emirates; and then Roberto Bolle, Paolo Fresu, Francesco De Gregori, Nicola Piovani and others.
Expo Dubai 2020: costs and tickets
The cost of tickets for Expo 2020 in Dubai obviously varies depending on your age or the type of subscription you want to take. An adult can opt for a day ticket at 23 euros, a multi-day pass at 48 euros and a season pass (valid, that is, for the entire duration of the event) at 121 euros. But many other special packages are planned, to be explored further on the Expo 2020 site, and of course discounts for under 17, over 60 and high school students.
To reach Dubai by air, the most convenient option is to. a direct flight. The United Arab Emirates can be reached from virtually any Italian airport, but only a few of them offer nonstop landing in Dubai: flying with Emirates, you can depart from Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, Venice and Bologna, with rates from 500 euros.
Theoretically, there would also be an option from Catania with a flight FlyDubai, but currently it does not appear that reservations can be made until after Expo 2020. Another alternative is to take a flight Etihad from Milan or Rome direct to Abu Dhabi (about an hour from Dubai), which comes to cost just over 300 euros. Cost-wise, the best time to fly to Dubai from our country is that between October and December, corresponding to the first months of the fair.
From Italy to Dubai, by plane it takes. About 6 or 7 hours with a direct flight, ranging from 5 hours and 45 minutes in Venice to 6 hours and 50 minutes in Milan; while if the destination is Abu Dhabi, the travel time ranges from 5 hours and 50 (Rome) to 6 hours and 20 (Milan). Travel to the United Arab Emirates is, of course, subject to compliance with the standards for Covid-19, which involve a negative swab taken before departure.
A variety of accommodations with different price ranges are available to stay in Dubai. The official hotel of the exposition, the Rove Expo 2020 Hotel, is definitely the most desirable and popular option, with rooms starting at 197 euros per night.
