Fiumicino is once again the most popular airport in Europe among passengers. The data, released by ACI (Airports Council International), refer to the third quarter of 2021. This is an exciting outcome for Leonardo da Vinci, especially since it exclusively takes into account the opinion of travelers. The measurement of airport quality is the result of interviews conducted at more than 250 airports worldwide, 91 of them in Europe.
In this article:
Fiumicino, the most appreciated services
The final score obtained was 4.61 out of a total of 5: "Outperformed European airports of all sizes. Reference is made to the summer quarter, which was marked by a recovery in traffic volumes. Passengers appreciated the effort of Aeroporti di Roma in ensuring quality service even during the Covid emergency."
Also highlighted were what appear to be the most valued services at Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport:
- Clarity of information offered to the public
- Terminal Cleaning
- Staff courtesy
- Internal airport facilities
- Waiting times at security checkpoints
Fiumicino's strategy is undoubtedly a winning one, considering how it has managed to reach first place in this special approval ranking since 2017 now. The goal is to continue growing, improving and focusing more and more on sustainability. In fact, AdR aims to reduce Co2 emissions to zero by 2030.
Here are the words of Mark Trunk, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma: "An award that confirms the excellence in services and comfort at Fiumicino. We are proud of it. Now we are committed to innovation and sustainability. We have a plan to reduce Co2 emissions to zero by 2030, ahead of the European target. We are targeting electric mobility and renewables. We are also accelerating on the digitalization front and open innovation."
VoloCity in Rome
The future is already here. In 2024, VIP customers may have the chance to reach the center of Rome in 15-20 minutes, starting from Fiumicino. This will be done by flying, taking advantage of an electrically powered helicopter, the VoloCity.
It is being carried out by a German company, Volocopter. A luxurious, fun and scenic way to avoid traffic jams of all kinds, effectively eliminating a huge element of stress upon arrival in the capital. In the first phase, the price will be high-end, intended only for a certain type of customer. Christian Bauer, Volocopter's commercial director, compared the initial figure to that needed today to rent a limousine: 140 euros, approximately.
The aircraft features two seats. In the launch phase of the project there will be a requirement to have a pilot on board. This means that only one passenger will be able to be carried. This does not make VoloCity a vehicle for family travelers, clearly. However, it is already looking beyond that, with the idea of having a drone available that can carry two people, which would drop the price of the ticket. This further prospect, however, will take more time. There are those who say it could become a reality beyond 2030, aiming to reach four seats.
