Here is Costa Toscana, the new flagship of Costa Cruises
Costa Toscana's first cruise will depart from Savona on March 5, 2022, with a week-long itinerary in the Western Mediterranean.
Today, in the Meyer yard in Turku (Finland), Costa Cruises took over Tuscany coast, new ship in the fleet powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the currently most advanced technology in the maritime sector to cut emissions.
In this article:
The Costa Group-which includes the Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises brands-was the first in the world in the cruise industry to use liquefied natural gas, and can currently rely on four ships powered by this technology: AIDAnova and Costa Smeralda, already in service; Costa Toscana, delivered today; and AIDACosma, coming soon.
LNG represents a breakthrough in terms of improving the environmental performance of cruise ships, both at sea and during port stops. Indeed, its use makes it possible to almost totally eliminate emissions of sulfur oxides (zero emissions) and particulate matter (reduction of 95-100%), while also significantly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxide (direct reduction of 85%) and CO2 (reduction up to 20%).
"Costa Toscana reinforces our commitment to responsible innovation by further contributing to the use of LNG applied to cruise ships, a technology we believed in first. It is an innovation that is part of a constantly evolving path of ecological transition. In fact, we are also working on testing additional innovations, such as fuel cells and batteries, with the goal of arriving at the first net zero-emission ship." stated Mario Zanetti, General Manager of Costa Cruises. "At the same time - he added - thanks to its excellent and innovative services, Costa Toscana will be able to attract new cruise passengers, helping us consolidate our presence in the Mediterranean and our gradual restart plan."
Costa Toscana's first cruise will depart from Savona, the March 5, 2022, with a week-long itinerary that will visit Marseille, Barcelona, Valencia, Palermo, and Civitavecchia/Rome. After her debut, the new flagship will remain positioned in the Western Mediterranean throughout the year. During the summer season she will call at Savona, Civitavecchia/Rome, Naples, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille, while during the fall season Palma de Mallorca will take Ibiza's place.
Tuscan coast is a real "smart city" itinerant. In addition to the major innovation of liquefied natural gas power, the ship has a number of cutting-edge technological innovations designed to further reduce environmental impact. The entire daily requirement of water is met by transforming that of the sea through the use of desalinators. Energy consumption is minimized through a intelligent energy efficiency system. In addition, on board will be carried out the 100% of separate collection. and the recycling of materials such as plastic, paper, glass and aluminum, which will be part of an integrated approach aimed at making circular economy projects a reality. The sea woods that will furnish the islands of the new restaurant Archipelago have been recovered thanks to the "Guardians of the Coast", the environmental education program for the preservation of the Italian coastline promoted by the Costa Crociere Foundation. For every dinner that will be enjoyed at Archipelago, Costa Cruises will donate part of the proceeds precisely to Costa Cruises Foundation to support environmental and social projects.
Costa's new flagship is a tribute to Tuscany, the result of an extraordinary creative project, curated by Adam D. Tihany, created to enhance and bring to life in one location the best of this wonderful Italian region, which gives its name to the ship, its decks and main public areas. All Made in Italy furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories will be standard and designed especially for Costa Toscana by 15 partners highly representative of Italian excellence. The onboard offer will be perfectly integrated in this extraordinary context: from the Solemio Spa, to the areas dedicated to entertainment; from the thematic bars, in collaboration with major Italian and international brands, to the 21 restaurants and areas dedicated to the "food experience." Comfortable and elegant, the more than 2,600 cabins also perfectly reflect Italian style and taste. The "sea terrace" category of cabins will offer a splendid annex where you can have breakfast, sip an aperitif or simply enjoy the view.
