From 2021, Volotea will voluntarily offset 5% of its total CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and will increase its carbon offset percentage by 5% each year until it reaches 25% of its carbon footprint in 2025.
In line with this goal, the airline has signed an agreement with VINCI Airports, the world's leading airport operator, that will allow it to join its certified forest carbon sink program, which will be developed in the areas of direct influence of both companies and in synergy with local agencies and organizations.
"We are very pleased to announce today the commitment we have made as a company to offset our carbon emissions," said Carlos Muñoz, president and founder of Volotea -. Since we started flying we have worked to reduce our CO2 emissions as much as possible. Our goal is to grow constantly while respecting and taking the utmost care of the environment. For this reason, we have never stopped investing in projects and initiatives to make aviation more and more sustainable. The decision to offset our 25% carbon emissions by 2025 is a key commitment and one of the many steps we will support in the area of sustainability."
Carbon footprint offsetting is another step for Volotea, which, with the goal of achieving cleaner and more environmentally friendly aviation, has worked since its creation on improving the eco-efficiency of its routes to reduce emissions from its operations as much as possible.
This commitment to caring for the environment has led Volotea to invest and participate in several R&D&I technology projects in recent years, focusing on the development of electric engines and hydrogen cells. It also took an important step this year by completing the standardization of its fleet, initially scheduled for 2023, and becoming an Airbus 100% airline. These aircraft are characterized by being aerodynamically more efficient, allowing Volotea to significantly reduce its carbon footprint per passenger.
Since the start of its operations in 2012, Volotea has implemented nearly 50 initiatives to reduce the fuel consumption of its aircraft, which, together with the transition of its fleet to Airbus, has led to a reduction of more than 41% in its emissions per passenger per km.
Volotea will begin introducing sustainable fuels from 2022 in its aircraft and is working with manufacturers and industry so that these fuels (which are difficult to access today) can be developed and generalized as soon as possible.
