Do you dream of boarding a cruise ship, and embarking on a very long tour of the world? Now you can do so much more. On a cruise ship You can even ... live there!
In this article:
While long cruises have seen their popularity grow somewhat around the world and have announced new routes and new ships even with the pandemic still going on, there is a somewhat unusual but increasingly insistent trend. Ships understood as condominiums, not necessarily ultra-luxury but exclusive nonetheless.
Also because, cross-country cruises around the world are not exactly cheap. On the contrary: they are generally reserved for those who are very rich and have a lot of free time. That's why the idea of an apartment on a ship sounds interesting. What other way would there be, to live for a long time (or perhaps permanently) aboard a giant of the seas?
What we know about the cruise ship to live in
The cruise ship to live in will be launched in 2024, according to the Storylines website. But you can already purchase its housing units. The "apartments" have 1 to 4 bedrooms, are fully furnished and have prices ranging from $400,000 to $8 million. You can choose studio apartments as two-story penthouses, either to buy or to rent (for 12 or 14 years).
According to Alister Punton, founder and CEO of the company, some of the 547 units have already been sold out. And the residences are on track to be sold out by the end of 2022.
Those who buy a unit, however, will not only become apartment owners: they will buy a real experience, aboard the brand new MV Narrative of Storylines (currently under construction in Croatia). And he will earn an all-inclusive life at sea, with prestigious services and the knowledge that he has chosen uniqueness.
The ship/condominium will have 20 restaurants and bars, a microbrewery and three swimming pools, as well as a library with 10,000 books, a cinema, a state-of-the-art spa, a bowling alley and a hydroponic garden farm. The maiden voyage will last 1000 days, crossing all continents and stopping between 3 and 5 days in each port.
The routes that a normal cruise ship travels in three weeks/one month, the MV Narrative will travel in three to four months. In fact, the idea is to extend the sailing experience and allow its residents to really experience the locations where the ship will dock. In addition to the scheduled stopovers, residents will also have the option of choosing other stopovers on certain days.
But what will happen to the owners once the ship can no longer be used (as of today, its expected life cycle is 60 years)? It is very simple: the owners are guaranteed a perpetuity clause. They can therefore move to a future ship, without shelling out any more money. Because a ship apartment is an investment property like any other. Just a little more special.
Be careful, however: to the purchase price we need to add an important annual fee (of $65,000 to $200,000), which covers maintenance costs and even food. So it is not an investment for everyone, of course, but it is currently the cheapest in the industry (suffice it to say that a unit aboard The World costs between 2 and 15 million, excluding taxes).
