Today, surprisingly, ITA Airways with a post on social channels announced the opening of two new routes for the summer period. The news would be nothing special except that the departure airport will not be Milan Linate but Malpensa and routes will be two intercontinental routes to the U.S..
ITA's new routes from Malpensa
In this article:
The new routes will lead to 3 intercontinental connections from the Varese province airport. Alitalia, before the covid, had only two intercontinental connections from this airport to New York and Tokyo. Starting next spring, there will also be two connections to Miami and Boston, two routes that previously were scheduled only from Rome Fiumicino.
The choice, yet another strong decision by management, would be clear: the intention is that they do not want to leave the U.S. market, the richer one, on Milan only in the hands of competitors. Not only that, this decision could also lead to the possibility of seeing some offers with feeder flights via Milan Linate or with Neos flying to Malpensa, which just today announced an agreement between the two companies.
Currently there is no sign of the routes on commercial channels, the only possible combinations to the two destinations are with stopover and then continuation with Delta.

The choice of the two destinations, which are strongly attractive to the Italian market, would also be a novelty for the Milan airport, which today has as many as six carriers on the Milan/New York route and no direct connections to Boston or Miami.
With New York starting in April, at this point it would also be logical to expect. the reopening of the old Alitalia House, we will see what happens.
When a new route is announced it is always a good time for serial accumulators of points and miles, too bad only that the loyalty program Flying is not yet operational.
