The future of documents is digital. It is a road long since taken, that of online identification, as is well demonstrated by the widespread use of SPID in our country. Apple is trying to get ahead of the curve, however, by making strides on the front of uploading identification documents to Apple Wallet, as announced in 2021.
Apple: digital identity
In this article:
Late last year Apple had opened up the possibility of adding digital identification documents to Apple Wallet. A process that is not complex, indeed, somewhat similar to adding new credit cards or travel tickets. All that will be required is a click on the "+" sign, and then scanning the document in question.
However, Apple explained how very strict biometric safeguards will be implemented, so as to protect users' information and, at the same time, offer certainty that the uploaded document actually belongs to the user in question. The process also requires a selfie, which will then be securely sent to the issuing state in order to verify the indicated identity. To make it even more secure, facial and head movements will have to be made, so as not to allow for fraud and identity theft. Under no circumstances, moreover, will you be able to use no more than one finger for Touch ID recognition.
Wallet documents: they are now a reality
Since the announcement in September 2021 of the possibility of uploading digital documents to Apple Wallet, much less than a year has passed, yet we already have the first official announcement of a state ready to make this procedure valid. Of course, we have to emphasize how this is all about the United States only. However, this is an important opening, and one that could push this system toward implementation in Europe as well in the near future, both as far as Apple and other systems are concerned.
It is theArizona to hold this particular record by being the first U.S. state to open its doors to this technology. Both driver's license and ID cards will be able to be entered on Apple Wallet. All conveniently Also transferable to Apple Watch. One will have the opportunity to be recognized in this way during TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, security checkpoints. From Phoenix-Sky Harbor International Airport to TSA checkpoints in other states. Apple has announced, however, how this first step will not be the last, far from it. For a little longer Arizona will remain the only U.S. state to provide such a chance for digital identification. There are in fact agreements with other administrations. Here is the list of states that will soon kick off this innovation:
- Colorado
- Hawaii
- Mississippi
- Ohio
- Puerto Rico
In the near future, however, the time will come for Georgia, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. Surprising as it may be, the states of New York and California, which have always been among the most active in technology, will not be closely part of the "party." They will certainly join the project later, but there will be a wait. For now on the Italian, and generally European, front there is no information. The only way to take advantage of this system is to treat oneself to a trip to the United States. It is emphasized, however, that this feature will be available starting with iPhone 8, as well as Apple Watch Series 4.
