One of the once-in-a-lifetime events to experience is the Lantern Festival in Thailand, whose name is Loi Krathong. You may have seen pictures, but below is everything you should know. If you don't feel like booking a trip right away, nothing else can.
In this article:
This unique festival takes place on the twelfth night of the full moon, following the lunar calendar. In 2022 it will be held on the November 9, to be precise (usually, according to the Western calendar, the date always falls in our 11th month).
Thailand: what is the Lantern Festival
A sea of light rises into the sky, creating a carpet of glowing stars and flames. The atmosphere is nothing short of magical, the result of the thousands of lanterns allowed to hover. The entire country stands still, gazing up at the vault of heaven. A long moment of general stillness. Everyone is lost in this once-a-year spectacle.
It is good to point out, however, how there are two variations of the same event, depending on the area of Thailand where it takes place. Thus, we have Loi Krathong e Yi Peng, thus festival of lights and festival of lanterns. They are definitely similar but the difference to be highlighted concerns the same lanterns exploited for the ceremonial. In the first case they are in fact left floating in the sea. In the second, however, they fly.
Loi Krathong
Wanting to translate it, the term Loi Krathong means floating basket. Tradition dictates that everyone who participates should work to make their own in a traditional way, using natural materials. A mixture of plants and wood, usually. Once the basic structure is obtained, decoration can be done according to personal taste.
The festivities begin in the evening, when everyone gathers on the banks of the river, on a beach or any place that gives access to water, so as to release the krathongs into the wild. The magic thus begins and the watery surface appears to be covered with stars. Before letting go of one's flames, one makes a wish or pauses in prayer. The event is not limited to this, of course, although it is the pivotal element. There are fireworks, entertainment of various kinds, food galore and even a real competition to elect the most beautiful lantern.
Loi Krathong: the origins
There are a variety of legends circulating regarding the origin of Loi Krathong. Some claim that it was originally a ritual aimed at showing worship towards the Water Goddess Phra Mae Khongkha. Others, however, are certain it was an Indian ritual, later transformed into a ceremony in honor of the Buddha.
The latter can be said to have been more successful among the population. Even today, in fact, the ceremony is closely associated with Buddhism. The candles symbolize enlightenment, while the krathong is nothing more than a simulacrum of one's sins, brooding hatred and anger. Things to be cast out of oneself to find ultimate serenity.
Yi Peng
The Yi Peng festival is characteristic of northern Thailand. It is impossible to admire both versions during the same vacation. In fact, the two events take place on the same day. A choice must be made, and then a second trip must be planned after a year, perhaps. In this case the star attraction is the sky, where thousands of lanterns blown by the wind move lightly. Again there is room for a prayer or wish before the launch.
The ceremony is preceded by the preparation of the city streets. Everything is decorated, including temples. Lanterns everywhere, in the most varied shapes and bright colors. A real sight for the eyes, especially for tourists. These decorations are then lit on the night of the launch in order to create a magical atmosphere everywhere.
The heart of this festival is undoubtedly Chiang Mai, where we recommend that you go. The reason is quickly explained. According to tradition, krathongs are also released in the rivers and lakes of the area. A way to experience both, although the real Loi Krathong is something else. Better to stay with your head in the air and enjoy the view.
