Super luxury hotel facilities in Italy are increasing. After the Mandarin Oriental Lake Como, is coming up on the Dolomites another structure of the well-known hotel brand.
In this article:
The Mandarin Oriental is preparing to land in Cortina with the Mandarin Oriental Cristallo Cortina, the brand's first alpine facility.
What we know about the Mandarin Oriental Cristallo Cortina
With already 36 hotels and 7 residences worldwide, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is adding yet another property to its prestigious chain.
Hosting the new Mandarin Oriental signature hotel will be the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, an exclusive ski resort distinguished by award-winning restaurants and luxury fashion boutiques.
The incoming resort will add further prestige to this corner of the Dolomites, among the most exclusive ski areas in Italy, thanks in part to guaranteed snow throughout the season. And, above all, thanks to 1,200 kilometers of interconnected slopes, created with substantial investment in snowmaking facilities.
With work scheduled to begin in the second quarter of the 2023, the new hotel will be the result of the careful renovation of the already well-known Crystal Hotel. Built in 1901 by the Menardi family, the Hotel Cristallo became a popular ski destination for the European elite in the following years. After the 1956 Olympic Games it began to experience its golden age, hosting several international celebrities including Frank Sinatra and Peter Sellers. Thanks to its grand hotel charm of the early 1900s, the Cristallo also attracted the attention of the film world, which chose it as the backdrop for numerous award-winning films.
A new life for the Hotel Cristallo
In 2021 the Cristallo Hotel was purchased by Attestor Limited, owner of the Mandarin Oriental brand, which put the renovation and expansion work in the hands of the prestigious architectural firm Herzog & deMeuron.
It is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2025, just before the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Once the work is completed, the hotel will be equipped with 83 rooms almost all with balconies. The thirty spacious suites will have wonderful views of the Dolomites. The hotel will also have a wide range of bars and restaurants, entertainment and event spaces. The star will be the large spa area, with a swimming pool that will run through the hotel from the inside to the outside.
Various experiences are also offered at the resort, such as skiing, golf, cross country walking, hiking and mountaineering. Tennis and ice skating will also be available at the resort, while the little ones can have fun and activities at the Kids Club.
These words full of satisfaction expressed about the project by James Riley, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental Group: "We are delighted to bring the Mandarin Oriental brand to the beauty of the Dolomites, which has long been a favorite destination for skiers and adventurers. No doubt it will appeal to Mandarin Oriental fans who love alpine activities. We look forward to providing the Group's exemplary service to the resort and collaborating with our partners in Lake Como. The goal? To create another exclusive property in one of Italy's most important regions."
