In 2021, theSingapore-Changi Airport was voted the world's best airport. In 2022 the scepter went to Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, followed by Tokyo-Hanada Airport. Only third was the Singaporean airport. However, that may soon change: the design of the new Terminal 5, which will change the face of Changi.
What we know about Singapore-Changi Airport's Terminal 5.
In this article:
Terminal 5 (T5) of the Singapore-Changi is a project of the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and the Changi Airport Group. It was first announced in the 2013. Then came the pandemic, which messed up every plan, and revolutionized even the initial idea.
"Drawing on lessons learned from the pandemic, T5 will be designed under the banner of the flexibility. If necessary, it can be divided into several mini-terminals, with convertible spaces for carrying out special operations, such as conducting tests and isolating at-risk passengers," Changi Airport Group explained in a note.
The new terminal is expected to serve 50 million passengers, a larger number than Terminals 1 and 3 combined. And it will be built on a site almost as large as the current airport. When he unveiled the renderings, in fact, Prime Minister Lee said, "We are building another Changi Airport-it will be huge." After unveiling plans for the Arrivals Hall, he then promised, "T5 will show the world what kind of place Singapore is."
The terminal will be extraordinary, according to promises. But it will also be safe. In fact, it will boast all the latest features to reduce the transmission of diseases, from contactless systems at touch points to enhanced ventilation. As the conceptual rendering shows, the roof of the T5 will be covered by an expanse of solar panels. Inside will be the latest smart building management systems, including district cooling combined with thermal energy storage.
Sustainability goal
By the time T5 comes into operation, thesustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use. should be an established reality. In fact, the terminal will be designed to allow the use of alternative fuels, including indeed SAF: excellent news for Singapore Airlines domestic airlines e Scoot, which began using it last July. Singapore Airlines Group, after all, boasts 200 operational aircraft at Changi Airport; having access to ready supplies of SAF is vital to achieving the Zero Carbon Footprint goal by 2050.
Not only that, the new terminal will also mount the latest technologies in automation, intelligent systems, and robotics. Among the ideas under consideration are the use of driverless vehicles to support baggage transport and the use of robotics for baggage handling. I self-contained luggage carts have been extensively tested in the UK, at London Heathrow: the Singapore-Changi intends to implement them on a large scale.
T5 will also seamlessly connect to Singapore's public transportation system. In fact, it will have a ground transportation hub where passengers will be able to access trains, buses, and other point-to-point services directly to the city center.
