Cambodia: cancelled all COVID-19 restrictions for travelers. Cambodia has finally lifted all restrictions imposed on entry into the country for business and tourism travel due to the pandemic. The Cambodian government is the latest Southeast Asian country to lift restrictions imposed by the Coronavirus, and as of Oct. 3, travel requirements have returned to pre-pandemic regulations.
In this article:
The pre-COVID border policy provides for the effective lifting of entry restrictions, regardless of the traveler's vaccination status.
What has changed in travel to Cambodia?
Cambodia was the first country ever in Southeast Asia to remove all testing for inbound vaccinated travelers as of March 2022. Since then, he has gradually loosened border measures.
In fact, in July 2022, it removed both insurance and mandatory vaccination requirements.
We remind readers, that prior to Oct. 3, 2022, anyone traveling to Cambodia was not required to undergo quarantine anyway, if able to present a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or alternatively, an antigenic test upon arrival mandatory for adults.
The latter was required for both unvaccinated and partially vaccinated persons aged 17 years and older. The cost of the test was 5 $. In the unfortunate event of having a positive result on arrival in Cambodia-as well as in the event of manifesting mild or moderate symptoms-visitors were required to be isolated at home or alternatively at facilities arranged by the Ministry of Health. However, patients with severe symptoms were sent to designated treatment centers.
Cambodia's new entry rules from October 2022
Fortunately, as of October 3, 2022, the situation has been simplified. Travelers to Cambodia will no longer have to show a vaccination certificate, much less undergo an antigen test upon arrival. In addition, the previous formality of passenger health declaration has also been eliminated.
Despite these simplifications, the level of attention to Coronavirus by the Cambodian government is still high. Therefore, the measure of remote temperature screening of passengers at entry hubs is still in place. This is in order to allow public officials to "check and alert passengers who may have symptoms of COVID-19."
In other words: the new entry rules in Cambodia signal the political will for a complete return to "normalcy," at least from the perspective of pre-pandemic travel. Of course, with the exception of temperature checks of incoming travelers. Other anti-Covid security measures to be observed in Cambodia include the use of masks in enclosed environments, as well as on flights to and from the country itself.
What are the current requirements for entry into Cambodia?
Foreign visitors wishing to enter the country must still meet a number of requirements that have nothing to do with anti-Coronavirus measures anyway.
In summary:
- Citizens of ASEAN (ten Southeast Asian states, which apart from Cambodia are Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), including Singaporeans, do not require a visa to enter Cambodia, for stays of up to 30 days. In case you need to stay longer or for specific needs, it is advisable to contact the Embassy or Consulate of Cambodia to properly arrange the visa.
- Visitors who are outside ASEAN (and do not have ASEAN nationality), such as Italian, French, British, Australian and American citizens, will need to apply for electronic visa - T category-before travel or upon arrival, at a cost of $36. However, the service is not available in Italian.
- Visitors' passports must meet the requirement of being valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Cambodia: whether or not entry involves (ASEAN) a visa.
- A round-trip ticket and a check of one's funds may be required by officials in order to verify that the traveler has enough money to visit the country. This, whether the visitor is entering with a visa or without a visa (ASEAN).
Cambodia: cancelled all COVID-19 restrictions for travelers - Some safety tips for a trip
Below, we point out some warnings to avert problems on a trip to Cambodia.
Crime
Beware of thieves who may target pedestrians or cabs outdoors. Visitors should always pay attention to their personal belongings. Theft is also quite common in hotel rooms, as is credit card and ATM fraud. If traveling at night, caution should be exercised and turn to licensed cabs via app for transportation and avoid mototaxi or tuktuk.
Weather
The sensitive period of the rainy season is from July to November. During these months, there can be thunderstorms and flooding and the consequent disruption of services and travel.
Health
As you may have guessed, there is always the possibility of contracting COVID-19 in Cambodia. If you need help and need medication, always go to licensed and legal pharmacies, as there is a risk of running into fake drugs in this country.
Insect-borne diseases include dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and malaria. For these reasons, inoculation of a vaccine for Japanese encephalitis before travel is recommended.
And because animals in Cambodia can carry rabies, rabies vaccination before travel is also recommended.
Conclusions on Cambodia: cancelled all COVID-19 restrictions for travelers.
With the lifting of restrictions on Cambodian soil, the situation has returned similar to the pre-pandemic period. Apart from checking the temperature of arriving passengers, entry into the country is now much easier, thanks to the abolition of immunization checks or antigen testing.
However, we remind readers that entry and exit rules can also change suddenly. Therefore, we recommend always consulting official sources, such as the Travel Safe of the Foreign Ministry, to contact the Embassy or Consulate of Cambodia before moving and in any case make their own assessments.
