Have you ever been on vacation and realized that the area of the city you are in is more appreciated by locals than by tourists? Most likely you are visiting the coolest neighborhood, what many tourists don't know about, but which hides the best places and experiences you can find during your vacation.
In this article:
How to find them? Help comes from Time Out magazine, which published a list of the coolest neighborhoods in 2022.
The ranking is the result of an extensive survey: thousands of people, from all over the world, were asked what their favorite neighborhood in the city was. Not only that: the editors of Time Out also used this experience to compile the definitive guide to the 51 coolest neighborhoods on the planet.
The top 3 coolest neighborhoods in 2022
At the top of the 2022 ranking is the vibrant American Colony, in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. According to Time Out, credit goes to its mix of Art Deco-style mansions and department store-like venues that play great music.
The silver medal goes to the neighborhood Cais do Sodrè of Lisbon, along the Tagus River. Long famous for its nightlife, it has recently positioned itself as a true landmark for food lovers. "This is the neighborhood where Lisbon's most promising young chefs are opening new restaurants" reads Time Out, which also suggests two places to stop for a gourmet break: Quiosque de São Paul and Tricky's.
In third place we find Wat Bo Village, in Siem Reap, Cambodia. According to Time Out, the area surrounding the spectacular Wat Bo Pagoda has seen major success during 2022. Where to stay? The guidebook suggests Viroth's and Treeline Urban Resort boutique hotels, while the must-stop for lunch is Tevy's Place, with its delicious organic meals (but it is also a social enterprise, set up to make local women independent).
The other glamorous neighborhoods
The ranking of the world's coolest neighborhoods continues with Ridgewood, a New York. The Queens area is liked for that original balance between newly (or soon to be) opened bars and restaurants and true institutions like Rudy's Bakery. Rounding out the Top Five is the Canadian neighborhood of Mile End. Site at Montreal, Time Out suggests walking through it, letting yourself be drawn to some of the city's best restaurants, as well as independent bookstores, flower stores, butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers.
