Free Wi-Fi for all aboard Delta planes: here's how to get it

Excellent news comes from across the ocean. Delta is set to offer all Skymiles program members free Internet access on board its aircraft. In the U.S. the first company to offer free connectivity is been Jetblue. Other carriers such as Southewest offer the opportunity to enjoy certain content, but the real competition is precisely to allow passengers to stay connected at all times, without interruption of service and without paying.
What will change aboard Delta
In this article:
Already today, members of Delta's loyalty program have the option of free surfing on a number of routes; what is set to change by the end of 2024 is that all flights will offer this service.
Those enrolled in Delta's frequent flyer program (membership I remember is free and there is also a interesting possibility of status match) must log into the on-board Wi-Fi portal and enter their Skymiles credentials. Non-SkyMiles members can purchase Wi-Fi for $ 5, a very small amount, but since it is free to join the loyalty program, I don't see why not sign up and pay for Wi-Fi.
Needless to say, with such a move Delta will effectively force other U.S. carriers and others to offer free connectivity to all passengers. I recently had a flight of over 15 hours without wi-fi and thought I was going to die.Â
In conclusion
We can only hope that this option will spread to Europe as well. To date, there are loyalty programs that give away connection to top tiers enrolled in the loyalty program, or only to a certain category of customers based on class of travel. Delta's choice, on the other hand, is democratic: free for everyone as long as they are enrolled in the loyalty program.
ITA Airways is still activating connectivity on board its A350s, while the A220 are set up and have the whole system, however, there is still no date for when wi-fi will be active on the Italian company's fleet.
