Few people will remember it, and yet Mexicana de Aviación was one of the oldest airlines in the world, its founding dates back to the years '20 and ceased its operations on August 28 of the 2010.
In this article:
It is fresh news that the Mexican government is considering initiating a new airline, presumably run by the military. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said a new airline could take off in a year, in fleet should have 10 planes, including the Presidential Jet and the Boeing 787.
Rumors hint that instead of starting an airline from scratch, the historic Mexicana could make a comeback, at least in name.
The history of Mexicana de Aviación
Mexicana was founded in 1921 as a trading company and postal correspondence, is the third oldest airline in the world, after KLM and Qantas.
He began flying 10 Lincoln Standard biplanes, later upgrading to Boeing 787s. In the 1980s he is nationalized by the federal government. In the 1990s the slow decline began, especially after the government sold its stake. In 2000 it joined Star Alliance, only to abandon it in 2004, preferring bilateral alliances.
Mexicana operated routes to and from Mexico City, Tuxpan, and Tampico, but-in addition to Mexico and Central America-it also operated in the United States, Canada, South America, and a few routes in Europe. Fares were quite advantageous, a middle ground between a Low Cost and a traditional airline, customer feedback was good.
In 2009 she joined Oneword, but in August 2010 she applied for the Chapter 11 for bankruptcy protection, this did not help save the airline.

President Obrador does not seem intent on using the plane presidential, would in fact have tried to sell it But with poor results. Therefore, the plane will be part of the new fleet of "Mexicana" or the new airline that will be ready in 2023.
"It would be very nice if the name Mexicana de Aviación was used in this company that could be formed. It will be a public airline because we had two before (Mexicana and Aeromexico).
There are many places that cannot be reached by air because they are not served by the current lines. The cost-benefit analysis is already underway; we have come to the conclusion that the company can reach its break-even point or start making a profit in just over a year."
President of Mexico Obrador
The project will be modeled after Cuba, where the armed forces operate airports, hotels and an airline. The goal is to provide extra revenue for the military without budget expenditures.
An airline historical seems ready to take to the skies again, we shall see if this project comes to fruition as President Obrador said.
