The first section of Milan's new M4 was opened on November 26, 2022., or the Lombard capital's new subway line that will connect the city from east to west.

The new M4 arrives at Linate
Currently the M4 subway, also known as the blue line, connects Dateo with Linate airport..
With this connection, it is possible to travel from east Milan to the city airport in less than 10 minutes, but the real revolution will begin next summer when the line will reach the San Babila metro station, which is the heart of Milan and the connection point with the rest of the metro network.
From here it will then be possible to change to get to the Fiera, the San Siro stadium or all other parts of the city. For those who, like me, live in Liguria, it will mean being able to park in Famagosta, avoid entering the ring road, take the subway and get to the airport in less than 20 minutes.
An ultramodern line
If London Heathrow, this summer saw the opening of the Elizabeth Line, which connects the airport with the center of the English capital, Linate will have nothing to envy and will allow passengers, whether arriving or departing, to move without stress and without having to take other means of transportation.
After completing the restyling work, only this piece was missing to make Linate an airport, unique in Europe, not even LCY, or London City, so close and connected to the rest of the city. Probably, with this new infrastructure the plane becomes competitive again at Milan/Rome Towards high-speed rail.
Where to take the subway at Linate
The station is directly connected to the arrivals area, in fact the subway entrance is on the opposite side from where passengers pop out when they exit into the public arrivals area.
For those familiar with Milan's city airport, the metro is in front of the multi-story parking lots.
The entire station, and the line, is fully automated. The turnstiles allow you to pay by simply bringing your smartphone or credit card close (and thus score points !).
Once past the turnstiles, one goes down a flight of escalators, down a long corridor, and down a second escalator.
All six stops in operation are fully accessible, equipped with escalators and elevators that take travelers from the street to the platform.
Cost of subway ticket at Linate
For now, the M4 line is in service Daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The first and last trains leave from the Linate and Dateo terminals at 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. The cost of the route is 2 euros, which is the same cost as a trip aboard any of the Milan metro trains.
From the M4, how to reach the other metros in the network (and vice versa)
At Dateo change to the S lines of the railway loop and get off:
- a Venice Gate > to continue the journey on the M1 line
- a Republic > to continue the journey on the M3 line
- a Garibaldi Gate > to continue travel on the M2 and M5 lines.
At Forlanini Station change to line S9 and get off:
- a Sesto San Giovanni > to continue the journey on the M1 line
- a Lambrate or Romolo > to continue the journey on the M2 line.
- a Porta Romana FS > to continue the journey on the M3 line
From Linate to FieraMilano venues.
- For Rho Fair: M4 to Daeto + S lines to Rho Fiera train station
- For MiCo / Milanocity: M4 to Dateo + S lines to Porta Garibaldi + M5 to Portello. Or M4 to Dateo + S lines to Porta Venezia + M1 to Lotto
In conclusion
Connecting Milan Linate Airport to the city center by subway was an infrastructure that had been awaited for decades. Today it is finally a reality. Not only has Linate now become (almost) perfect, but the entire area above the track has been completely redeveloped with bike lanes, fields where you can play sports, gardens and greenways. Truly a great job.
