The existing building will be renovated with the addition of brighter spaces, increased check-in desks, a new security screening area, and optimized movement of departing passengers. The modernization and expansion of the terminal will lead to more stores, restaurants, and services that will improve the quality of the travel experience for passengers.
The organization of the work is designed not to interrupt the services offered to users and keep the airport open at all times. The first phase of construction will be completed by January 31 and includes the removal of the structure underneath the two-flight staircase connecting the first and second floors (which will be removed in the coming months). Beginning at the end of January, the second phase will begin, which will last about two months during which escalators and stationary will be built between the departures floor and the second floor. This will involve a temporary relocation of some car rental offices located on the second floor.
The additional east block will be completed in the summer, spanning 3 floors and 5,500 square meters, bringing the total area of the terminal to more than 20,000 square meters. The new areas will be phased in until completion, which is scheduled for early 2024. The total expenditure for expansion and modernization of the air terminal will be about 20 million euros. Of these, 11.3 million were allocated by the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority under the Extraordinary Investment Program. Another 5 million was allocated by Regione Liguria from resources of the Regional Strategic Fund to support the port's infrastructural and technological development.
"The start of this construction site is another step forward in the work to modernize and expand the terminal. - Paolo Odone, president of Genoa Airport, comments. -Â We will strive to avoid any inconvenience to users for the entire duration of the work. The new airport will be more beautiful, welcoming and efficient. We look forward to introducing it to our passengers."
