Thailand reopened to tourism from July 2021. At first it was the Phuket Sandbox, then it became Thai Pass and Test & Go and as of spring 2022 they are back free to travel to the Asian Kingdom without any restrictions with the doors open even to the unvaccinated. Now, however, Thailand has changed the rules and on very short notice for a reason: as of Sunday a veritable invasion of tourists from China is expected.
The new rules for entering Thailand
The news was published in these hours by the Bangkok Post, the nation's most widely circulated English-language newspaper. Not wanting to displease the Chinese government, Thailand has chosen not to distinguish between those who come from China and those who depart from any other nation in the world.
"The principle is that there will be no discrimination against a particular country because Covid-19 is spreading to all countries and the tensions are similar. So, Covid-19 should not be an issue of discrimination against any country," he said. He did not say when the new measures would take effect, but officials said they should start before Chinese visitors arrive. Authorities in tourist provinces should prepare their hospitals and guests, while employees of tourist and transportation services should have at least four doses of Covid-19 vaccine, Anutin added.
All international visitors should be able to Demonstrate that they have been vaccinated at least twice.
In addition, for those who will depart Thailand to a nation that requires a pre-departure negative buffer, adequate travel insurance is required, so the costs of stay and possible hospitalization will be covered and not borne by the state.
In conclusion
This "democratic" choice not to anger the Chinese government is likely to inconvenience millions of travelers who were currently preparing to go to Thailand. Until today it was possible to enter even without a vaccine, but as of midnight today this will no longer be the case.
