From Naples, Ryanair Commercial Director Jason McGuinness said: "As Italy's No. 1 airline, Ryanair is pleased to announce its largest-ever operation to Naples for the summer of 2023, with 6 new routes to exciting destinations , including Gdansk, Memmingen, Paphos, Shannon, Trapani and Zakynthos, giving Naples customers even more choice for their summer vacations at the lowest fares in Europe With five aircraft based in Naples - representing a $500 million investment and supporting 150 highly paid jobs - Ryanair continues to provide more traffic, more jobs and lower fares than any other airline in Italy. However, if Ryanair wants to continue to grow and invest in the region, the City of Naples must rescind its proposed 2-euro increase in the tax on departing passengers, which would make Naples one of Italy's most expensive and inaccessible airports. The growth of this Summer for Naples is contingent on the elimination of this new tax, ensuring that the Region remains competitive with other areas with low access costs. In addition, we call on the Italian government to immediately eliminate the municipal surtax (6.50 euros per departing passenger) from all Italian airports to ensure continued growth of the Italian tourism economy.
GESAC CEO Roberto Barbieri commented: "Ryanair's numbers confirm the extraordinary connectivity of the Neapolitan airport and its ability to boost the region's economy. After the pandemic shock, we have painstakingly rebuilt and expanded the flight offer, bringing visitors to our region well beyond the summer peak period, contributing to the deseasonalization of tourist flows. In everyone's interest and according to reasonable modalities identified with the government, we hope to solve the knot of the increase in the municipal surtax, in order to maintain current traffic volumes and simultaneously develop the Salerno airport, which will be gradually operational starting next year."
