On long-haul flights the traditional safety demonstration has been replaced by video. Videos that were initially boring animations that were decidedly unattractive, while today they are true mini-movies. In some cases we have seen real works of art with world-class directors.

Here is the new video from British Airways

In this article:

Five minutes, 300 seconds of attention that can make all the difference in an emergency. That's why companies are increasingly trying to find original ways to win the eyes and ears of passengers. BA's new video plays on things synonymous with the UK, from discussing the weather to fish and chips by the sea. Note how a second version of the safety video will be released by the end of the year, because soon the entire BA fleet will be wearing a new uniform.

The video will be shown on the airline's long-haul fleet from May 1, 2023. The protagonists are not actors or celebrities, but British Airways staff from across the airline in their roles on the ground and in the air. One of the stars, British Airways engineer Carl Carpenter, walks through an engineering hangar while asking customers to unplug their devices, before his vehicle comes to an abrupt halt. Cabin assistant Sima Patel-Pryke asks customers for their attention as safety instructions may differ from those of other aircraft on which they have previously traveled. In response, British rapper Little Simz, in the guise of a passenger, removes his headphones and observes, "What?!"

In addition to giving space to airline workers, the video also features some of the British public. When cabin crew member Emily Mae Jackson reminds customers that life jackets should not be inflated inside the plane, viewers see instructions jokingly brought out of situ with a real-life farmer near Dover and two fishermen on the beach at Deal in Kent who all inflate their life jackets .

Calum Laming, Chief Customer Officer of British Airways, said, "We have seen safety demonstrations before, so we knew we had to create something different that would catch the eye and be totally in line with our British Original positioning. We wanted this to be a true celebration of originality, and for us it's our people who, along with where we come from, make us unique. That's why it was important for us to encourage so many of our fantastic colleagues to do what they do every day for our customers and for each other. We also wanted to inject some wit and show the Britishness and all the quirks that put us on the map by shining a light on real-life people-from fishermen and chip store workers to friends who get around, as well as some familiar faces who help put Britain on a stage. So sit back in the take-off position and we hope you really enjoy our new safety video."

ITA Airways has launched its first safety video last fall starring Italian sports champions. Among the most beautiful I would recommend. there are the one from Air New Zealand, that of Air France and Qatar. Little masterpieces that can make you imagine being ready for takeoff and not on your couch at home.
