American Express, end of life for old Alitalia. Are the new ITA Airways credit cards coming?
Goodbye to Alitalia Amex, persistent rumors of new ITA Airways American Express
These days American Express is sending an email to all holders of the historic credit cards issued in partnership with Alitalia. The company ceased to exist in 2021, but holders were able to continue using the old cards with remodeled benefits having failed the partner airline.
In this article:
Although the Millemiglia program still exists and continue to allow members to accumulate and spend points, Amex has not entered into any agreement with the new program: cards had stopped generating Millemiglia points, allowing instead to accumulate Membership points Like all other Amex cards.
The email to customers
Holders are then notified that By the end of 2023 all cards will have to be replaced.
Because I'm still a starter
Me I still have both personal Alitalia Platinum and corporate Alitalia Gold in my portfolio. Amex made a few offers in recent months, but I did not hesitate and continued to pay the fees. The reasons are simply two:
- Both accumulate MR points, with a better rate than any other card present in the market. For 1 euro spent, the first one makes me accumulate 50% more points, or 1.5. The corporate one 1.25, or 25% more than the other corporate cards.
- Personal Platinum's travel insurance is something unique in the world. Just give an example with baggage protection. In case of 48-hour delayed delivery, there will be a refund of more than 2500 per passenger.
On balance, then, the extra points accumulated allowed me to write off the fee, and the only time I needed the insurance I had no problem getting what I spent.
The new Amex Ita Airways credit cards.
This has been rumored for months. Ahe mouths are currently sewn shut on both the ITA and Amex sides. However, the clues suggest that it is a matter of weeks. First the agreement on Membership points and Volare points, then the status Executive ex officio to Centurion cardholders.
It will have to be seen what these papers will offer, What benefits of the old Alitalia cards will be taken up and if there are ideas and insights copied from similar papers in other international markets.
The biggest flaw at the moment remains the lack of an award chart, or the ability to redeem using only points for an award ticket.
