Delta Vs Tempo, two new hotels in the heart of Manhattan. One is perfect for New Year's Eve ball drop
Marriott and Hilton continue to battle it out in the pace of new hotel openings in New York, today we discuss two new hotels in the heart of Times Square

24If there is one thing New York City does not lack, it is hotels, at the end of 2019, New York City ended the year with 703 hotels operating in the city and 138,000 rooms available. A year earlier, it had 672 hotels operating with 122,000 rooms. I would say that between covids and new openings today there will be no less than 750/800 hotels, and 130,000 rooms.
In this article:
On TFC we have talked about many new openings, starting with the most anticipated one in recent years the Aman with a pool overlooking Central Park and Fifth Avenue. But we also reviewed many of the new openings such as the Motto in midtown Hilton and the Moxy in Downtown Marriott.
Probably the two chains account for more than 10% of the hotels in the Big Apple metropolitan area, just think that the new Hilton Time is the number 50 facility in the city.
Two new addresses in Times Square
Both hotels open in the Times Square area, the most visited spot in the Western Hemisphere, where 400,000 people pass through every day. As I have had the opportunity to explain several times, in New York you should not trust the name of the area attached to the hotel sign. Because there is a risk of being disappointed and having to walk 10 minutes, or more, to reach the hotel than imagined.
WHEREAS, I personally find the Times Square area, the absolute worst, in this case one must distinguish between the two facilities. Hilton's new opening is right above the most famous square of the entire United States, and also the loudest and most messy.
The new skyscraper that houses Time. is in front of the W Hotel Times Square and at the Marriott Marquis. In this image, which I took in December 2022, you can see the structure still under construction on the opposite side of the square from the W where I slept (or rather where I struggled to sleep).
The new Marriott hotel is slightly further away from the square and is about 10 minutes from the square, at 40th and 9th. Still Times Square area, but in a less messy area.
The new Delta Times Square
This sign is not present in Italy; rather, it is located almost exclusively in the United States, the chain's slogan is "Simple Made Perfect," the hotels are designed for the mid-range, or as Marriott calls them "the savvy traveler." What these facilities offer are the essentials that guests need. Translated there is virtually nothing but a premium hotel fitness center features state-of-the-art Matrix gym equipment with connectivity consoles and plenty of space for stretching and yoga.
A bar in the lobby called George's and a restaurant called George's Nephew.
The hotel's 310 guest rooms are inspired by true craftsmanship, with a premium aesthetic combined with comfortable materials for a simple but purposeful design. Intuitive touches include a bright, neutral palette with rich but subtle color accents and high-quality finishes on platform bed, seating area, desk, and bathroom, plus complimentary Wi-Fi and bottled water.
The new Tempo by Hilton
Of the two openings Hilton's is certainly the more intriguing. First for location, the only hotel in the group directly on Times Square, a facility that is literally surrounded by Marriott hotels, so much so that in the official photos for the property it was impossible not to frame at least one of the many signs in the area. Second because this is the first structure of the new brand that Hilton has designed to fill the gap in its portfolio, and in the coming months there will be about 30 Tempo hotels scattered across the U.S. including Raleigh, Nashville, Louisville and San Diego.
Located in the TSX Broadway, a new 46-story tower with more than 660 rooms. Highlights of the hotel include sweeping views of Times Square, a lively cocktail lounge with outdoor terrace, a fitness center with top-of-the-line equipment, and exclusive Tempo by Hilton wellness rooms with Peloton bicycles.
"From rooms designed to cater to the well-being of our guests, to a range of culinary offerings designed for health-conscious travelers, Tempo by Hilton provides an expanded wellness experience for our guests and reflects the continued growth of our lifestyle brands that are reshaping the traditional hotel experience. Tempo by Hilton speaks to how we innovate our brands at Hilton every day," said Matt Schuyler, chief brand officer, Hilton. With incredible entertainment and retail spaces from TSX Broadway and an immersion into the heart and culture of Times Square, this hotel is truly a destination in its own right.
Danny Hughes, Executive Vice President and President, Americas, Hilton said, "Times Square is experiencing its own renaissance and, in partnership with TSX Entertainment, we are excited to play a role in propelling this iconic neighborhood into its next chapter, encapsulating the energy and vibrancy of the heart of the Big Apple. Tempo by Hilton Times Square is an important addition to Hilton's portfolio of more than 50 hotels throughout New York City, and we look forward to serving as a new home base for business travelers, tourists, and locals looking to stay and play in this dynamic destination ."
Throughout the hotel, guests will find flexible and elegant common spaces ideal for brainstorming with teammates, socializing with friends, or simply finding a quiet place to relax.
The rooms are designed with three zones for functionality and comfort: a Get Ready Zone, a well-lit space perfect for getting ready for the day or a night out, finishing up a job or grabbing a bite to eat; a large bathroom with an oversized shower, mirror with Bluetooth speaker and luxurious Apotheke bath products; and a cozy sleeping environment with Sealy Accelerate mattresses, exclusive to Tempo by Hilton with refreshing sheets along with amenities including a 65-inch TV and mini-refrigerator.
All rooms and suites offer unparalleled views of Times Square through floor-to-ceiling windows, and modern comfort is achieved through elegant, natural tones of light wood and blue combined with touches of brass and leather. Lighting automatically turns on as you enter and dims as the sun sets, also offering the option to brighten the space if you are working or preparing for the day.
Perfect for New Year's Eve, the hotel also houses 31 Ball Drop rooms with close-up views of the famous Times Square Ball, with the most spectacular view from the Presidential Suite, which has an elegant living area, dining room and kitchenette.
For those on the go, the hotel's Grab & Go, created in partnership with Bluestone Lane, the premium Australian-inspired roasting, coffee and lifestyle brand, ensures guests have access to everything they need to sustain energy and increase focus. Under the leadership of restaurant director Kamal Ahmed and chef de cuisine Kit Skarstrom, the signature Highball restaurant serves shareable dishes from sunrise to sunset. As the day turns to evening, Highball transforms into an elegant cocktail lounge, perfect for drinks before or after a Broadway show such as Tempo's signature free-spirited, witty cocktails, a variety of beers on tap, and a carefully curated wine list. Guests can enjoy an intimate indoor seating area or a wraparound outdoor terrace with exceptional views of Times Square.
