This is not the first Moxy I review, and it certainly will not be the last. This Marriott portfolio chain is designed to meet the needs of modern travelers.
In this article:
The soul of all these hotels, built almost always from the ground up to provide a true Moxy experience from the ground up, Is in the lobby. Here on the ground floor is everything a Moxy offers its guests and everything guests look for in a Moxy.
Reservation
Having to spend a few days in Bergen, southern Norway, this was one of the few options to collect points. Too bad my 4-night stay was scheduled a few days after the expiration of the "qualifying double nights" promotion launched in early January.
As I often recount Marriott is not as generous as Hilton when it comes to promotions, while Hilton Honors is always promoting, Bonvoy on the other hand launches few and not consecutive promos.
Translated in a nutshell, no bonuses or extras in this stay that cost me 390€ for 4 nights In a triple room.
Location
The difference from the usual is. this Moxy is not near an airport. Especially in Europe, the Moxy chain is present near garlic airports, for example in Milan they are at both Linate and Malpensa. But they are present in London, Paris, Frankfurt. Only in Brussels is in the city center.
Here, however, we are in the city, not exactly downtown, but about a 25-minute walk from the heart of Bergen, or about 10 minutes by car. The streetcar stop is about a 5-minute walk away, but you can walk to the center passing several scenic places in the city.
Check-in
We arrived in the late afternoon from the airport. What is special about the Moxy is that the reception desk is incorporated into the bar counter; it is like that in all the hotels I have visited, bar none.
I almost never have breakfast in these hotels, the reason being. breakfast is not part of choice benefits Of status. The cost is not worth the quality offered so I always take the bonus points as a welcome gift. However, having to stay 4 days with my family, I preferred to take the credit of 10$ per day/adult, rather than 500 bonvoy points for the whole stay. And write off the cost of breakfast.
The room
The room was on the top floor of the hotel overlooking the small square and overlooking the office building.
Too bad because the rooms on the opposite side instead had much better views of the river and adjoining marina.
The DNA of the Moxy is to have simple, basic rooms, and this one had everything usually found in these hotels. A crib had been added to our room for Bete, which is not a given in these hotels, since often even if I book for 3 I always have to request it upon arrival.
Unfortunately, however, the room was accessible, so the bathroom was large but uncomfortable for normal use.
The common spaces
As in all Moxy the good stuff is on the ground floor. The bar counter serves as reception, wine cellar, and kitchen, and all around it is the social life of the hotel.
The extra of this hotel was also definitely the outdoor part, the dehor, the view of the river and the square on the opposite side.
The beauty of these hotels is just the social life, the informal environment and the freedom of expression.
For guests there is a very small gymnasium, perhaps one of the smallest I have ever found in a hotel.
Food & Beverage
As mentioned I rarely have breakfast in a Moxy, being hotels close to airports I usually take points and have breakfast in the lounge (free).
The buffet is spread around the bar counter and the offerings are very basic, here the difference from other hotels of this sign were the "alternative" products so alternative that one morning there was no cow's milk, only substitutes.
More interesting is the ability to munch on something in the evening in case you don't want to go out to dinner or arrive late and don't want to move around town.
In conclusion
A Moxy is always a good choice and if it is practically the only one that allows you to accumulate points it is a must. It again confirms the insufficiency at breakfast, but since in the end the cost is zeroed out, or almost zeroed out, by the credit provided as a benefit from the status it is not a serious shortcoming, of course if you do not have the status it is not worth what it costs.
