Update: A few days after putting flights from Milan to New York back on sale from March 30, Emirates has brought forward the return of the A380 to Feb. 1, thus two months than previously encountered.

In this article:

    ...

As expected with the return of warm weather, which for the aviation world means March 30, 2024, Emirates will bring the A380 back to Milan for the flight in fifth freedom regime towards New York.

As stated to TFC by the Dubai-based carrier's #1 in Italy, Ghiringhelli, the A380 returns in time to carry tens of thousands of passengers on the Milan-New York route, one of the most profitable for the company that has carried millions of passengers in recent years.

This brings back two daily rotations that the A380, the only one to stop at Malpensa, will have to Dubai. EK 205 to NY and EK206 from JFK today is operated with the Boeing 777/300 and from Sunday, March 30, will return to operation with the aircraft that made Emirates a world transport power.

Unfortunately, however, there is currently no trace of premium economy in the sales systems. One of the reasons for the downgrade was precisely to allow for the downtime needed for the revamp of the planes, but judging from what EK puts on the site it looks like the Milan/New York will still not be guaranteed with PE. In fact, Emirates' strategy is to offer the new cabin for sale only when it is guaranteed at 100% the presence of premium economy on the route, until then passengers can receive a free surprise upgrade if the rotation is carried out with a refurbished car.

No more ITA on route to New York

The scenario the Emirates giant will find will be very different the next time it takes off to JFK from Milan; ITA Airways' daily service will cease on January 8, and it is certain that it will mainly benefit the Dubai-based airline.

ITA Airways abandons Malpensa, the NON-official reasons behind the historic decision

Among the reasons ITA made the decision to leave MXP is this very Fifth Freedom flight among the causes. As stated by Emirates itself there are thousands and thousands every year of Italian passengers who fly to the Big Apple aboard its planes and among the many (6) carriers that connect Milan with NY this is definitely the strongest one from the point of view of appeal and product for economy passengers, but also for those who want to travel in premium cabins, as well as being the only carrier offering First Class to the United States from Italy.

    No premium economy

I must say that I was really surprised not to see the new premium economy cabin for sale, I have not yet traveled in this seat and I was really waiting for the debut on the route from Milan to try it and review it on the YT channel. This cabin is only featured on the A380 and will also be installed on the New aircraft coming to the fleet starting in 2024.

Now all that remains is to wait for the official announcement from Emirates, which will perhaps also clarify the premium economy aspects from Italy to Dubai and then on to New York.
