It was not the best way to say goodbye to Milan Malpensa Airport, that of ITA Airways. In fact, the last flight operated by Italy's national airline left Malpensa yesterday afternoon almost three hours late: AZ 604 to New York Kennedy Was scheduled to be scheduled at 1:20 p.m., but instead took off at 4:10 p.m..
In this article:
The honor of the last flight on the Milan-New York (as well as the last blue livery flight from Malpensa) was the turn of theAirbus A330-200 'Tazio Nuvolari', makes EI-EJP (below and above the title in Lorenzo Giacobbo's photo), which had been handed over to Alitalia in October 2012 and then 'inherited' by ITA when the latter took over from the historic Italian flag carrier in October 2021.
Tomorrow morning, Jan. 8, the same A330-200 will return to Malpensa from JFK before a ferry flight that will take it to Fiumicino, serving the company's Rome hub. From Jan. 8 onward, ITA Airways website offers Milan-New York flights from Linate with a stopover at Fiumicino: In the morning, one can leave Milan's city airport at 8 a.m. with AZ Flight 2021, and after a one-hour and 15-minute stopover, depart for the Big Apple with AZ 608, also operated with A330-200.
Wanting to indulge in a less early morning departure, one leaves Linate at 12 noon with AZ 2037 and, after a stopover in the capital of 1 hour and 40 minutes, takes off for JFK with AZ 610, also operated with an A330-200. In the former case, one arrives in New York at 2:25 p.m., in the latter at 6:55 p.m.
Interestingly, the ITA website does not report direct flight from Malpensa to JFK operated by Delta (Similarly, Delta's website does not list any flights from Milan to New York with a stopover at Fiumicino).
Not that there is a lack of alternatives from Malpensa to reach New York nonstop. In fact, before ITA's farewell, Milan was along with London the European city that was connected non-stop to New York by the largest number of airlines: as many as seven, now down to six. The choice, therefore, is not lacking:
Delta Airlines colleague daily Malpensa to JFK with a'A330-900neo (flight DL 185) which takes off at 12 noon and lands at 3:30 p.m.; on the return, DL 184 leaves JFK at 7:40 p.m. to be in Malpensa at 9:45 a.m. the next day. On board are. Three classes of service: Economy (with a Comfort+ section), Premium Economy and Business (Delta One Suites).
American Airlines uses a Boeing 777-200ER everyday on Malpensa JFK, with flight AA199 taking off at 10:15 a.m. and landing at 1:35 p.m.; in the opposite direction AA 198 takes off at 6:15 p.m. and lands at 8:10 a.m. the next day. There are three classes of service: Economy, Premium Economy and Business.
Emirates also connects Malpensa to JFK with a daily flight operated with a Boeing 777-300ER (but from spring the Airbus A380 will return to the route). Flight EK 205 leaves Malpensa at 3:40 p.m. and lands at 6:55 p.m.; on the return, EK 206 leaves New York at 10:20 p.m. to land in Milan at 11:55 a.m. the next day. There is a choice of three classes of service on board: Economy, Business and First (Emirates is the only one with a first-class cabin between Milan and New York).
At JFK, finally, you can go to. Three times a week (on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays) even with Neos, whose flight NO 787 leaves Malpensa at 11:55 a.m. and arrives in the Big Apple at 2:50 p.m.; on the return flight NO 789 0perated with a Two-class Boeing 787-9 (Economy and Premium Economy) takes off from JFK at 5 p.m. and lands in Malpensa at 7 a.m. the next day.
United Airlines, on the other hand, connects Malpensa to New York's other airport, Newark. (which is actually located in New Jersey). The Boeing 777-200ER (UA Flight 18) takes off from Milan at 10:25 a.m. and lands in Newark at 1:40 p.m.; on the return UA 19 leaves at 6:25 p.m. and arrives in Malpensa at 8:10 a.m. Three cabins are available on board: Economy, Premium Economy and Business.
Finally, to Newark also flies from Malpensa with La Compagnie. Flight B0300 leaves at 1:30 p.m. and lands at 5:25 p.m.; in the opposite direction, B0301 leaves Newark at 9:50 p.m. To land at Malpensa at 12 p.m. Connections are operated five times a week (on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) by Airbus A321LR outfitted entirely in Business Class.
