When a company touches the rules of its loyalty program, Nine times out of ten it displeases the vast majority of members, and with the changes announced in early 2024 BA confirmed this rule.
In this article:
The change announced by the British company is not a devaluation, for now, but the twisting of a rule at the bese of the program: the qualifying period of each user.
According to BA this change will please families and colleagues, who will then have their accumulation/expiration dates aligned. Whereas today each user has his or her own expiration date spread throughout the year, from April 1, 2025 (yes April Fool's Day) all users will have the same expiration date.
The new clarifications serve to clarify the many doubts and lowering the tone of user protests, especially in England, but not only since BA's frequent flyer is very popular around the world, including Italy.
Did you get your flight cancelled, miss your connection, land late?
You could get up to 600€ compensation per person
At the moment the page is not available in Italian, but you get the gist very well.
If your qualifying period ends before April 1 today, here's what will happen:
- Your current year of level point collection will continue normally until January 8, 2025. Status achieved during this period will expire on February 28, 2026
- The next collection period will be from January 9 to March 31, 2025
- Level point adjustment: we will add all level points earned during the period from April 1, 2024 to January 8, 2025 to determine your level status
- Any level achieved within the transition period (April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025) will expire on April 30, 2026
In a nutshell, for those whose status expires before the rule change, they will have a few more months to renew their membership until 2026.
In contrast, here is an example for those whose anniversary date is after April 1:
- Your current year of level point collection will continue normally until September 8, 2024. Status achieved during this period will expire on October 31, 2025
- The next collection period will be from September 9, 2024 to March 31, 2025
- Level point adjustment: we will add all level points earned during the period from April 1 to September 8, 2024 to determine your level status
- Any level achieved within the transition period (April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025) will expire on April 30, 2026
In this case there is the double validity of flights made between the new date (April 1) and the anniversary date. Routes flown during this period will be valid twice, for status until 2025 and for status thereafter.
In any case all users who renew their cards between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025 will still have their cards renewed until April 30, 2026.
For example, in my case, having my card expiring in October 2024 and being on track to renew it I could find myself a nice gift from this change with the renewal of not 12 months but a full 18 months.
