Volotea wins the 'race' for the first landing. But Salerno also 'gives' water cannon to easyJet

Just over 23 degrees, clear sky And a light breeze from the northeast: There could be no better day for the reopening of theSalerno airport, 8 years after the last commercial flights.
In this article:
It is just past 8 a.m. when the flight easyJet EJ23609, left an hour and five minutes earlier from Milan-Malpensa, touched down on the runway of Salerno's "Amalfi Coast" airport: it was beaten to the punch (by only 10 minutes) by the other flight that inaugurated Campania's second airport, the Volotea V72152 departed from Nantes.

While the Spanish low-cost carrier, for the NTE-QSR route, chose to use a Airbus A319 by 156 passengers, easyJet for its part operated the MXP-QSR with one of the A320neo recently joined the fleet and fitted out with 186 seats: both flights-which, predictably, were virtually full-were welcomed by the traditional "water cannon", the water arch reserved for airlines making an inaugural flight.

Passengers on easyJet flight EJ23609 also found refreshments at the Malpensa departure gate and were gifted with small cadeau: an EJ-branded wallet with a famous phrase by Alberto Moravia.

The Volotea V72152 and the easyJet EJ23609 are the only flights scheduled for today: the first departed at 09:39 to the Breton city, the second took off at 09:32 to return to Malpensa airport. As my colleague Matteo Legnani wrote in the past few hours., Salerno Airport's (QSR) operations will be enriched over the next few weeks: the peak of the current summer season is scheduled for September 2, when weekly connections will touch 29.

After the start of connections with MXP, easyJet flights to and from Berlin, Geneva and Basel will start on July 12; the next day, however, on the 13th, will be the turn of connections to its hub, London-Gatwick. After Nantes, then, From July 13, Volotea will also connect Cagliari and from September 2 Verona and Catania will be added.

Finally, Ryanair will begin 2024 season at QSR on Aug. 1, when connections to Bergamo will start; then, on August 2, it will be the turn of flights to and from Turin; on 04/09, dulcis in fundo, connections to and from London-Stansted will follow.
The 3 low-costs will then be joined by a fourth (decidedly lesser-known) airline from July 29: Universal Air, which will connect Salerno and Malta airports with two flights a week (operated by the legendary Dash 8-400 turboprops).
