Travel rhymes with happiness. No, it is not true; at least not literally. For many Italians, however, travel and happiness are two closely related things.
In this article:
This is what emerges from a survey commissioned by Vueling, a Spanish low-cost airline of the IAG group, and conducted on a sample of a thousand Italians.
Material goods? No, thank you. Better to travel
"What is the activity that makes you happiest?" was the first question administered to survey participants.
Being with one's partner? Going to the concert of one's favorite artist/group? Going shopping? No, these three options garnered between 2 and 7% of preferences; not much. But then what is the activity that, really, makes us smile the most? Well, for 18.3% of the respondents, it is going out with friends that makes them happiest; for 21%, on the other hand, it is hobbies that cheer up the most; but to excel, with 46% of preferences, are travel.
What motivates people to travel?
The question may seem a bit trivial, I realize. And so, perhaps, is the answer: almost half of the respondents (44.7%, to be precise) admitted that, when they travel, they aspire to relax. But that's not all: there are also those who want to learn about local culture and traditions (the 28%); those, on the other hand, who seek entertainment (16%); and, finally, those who are driven by the spirit of adventure (the 8,3%) and those who are curious to try new flavors (the 3%).
Yes, travel: but where and with whom?
As stated, travel rhymes with happiness; but also with love. Therefore, the majority of survey participants (42.4%) prefer to travel with your own 'media naranja'. However, traveling with family (30%), traveling with one's friends (19.8) are also highly appreciated; 'solo travel', i.e., traveling alone, is also increasingly liked, with 7.3% of preferences. The same cannot be said for travel with strangers: only 0.5% of respondents were interested in these kinds of experiences.
"Yes, travel!", sang in 1977 the immense Lucio Battisti: yes, but where? Of all of them, the goal most often associated with happiness is one and only one: the sea, with over 53% of the preferences. The city (21.4%) and the mountains (18.3%) are also highly appreciated; at the bottom of the ranking, however, we find the countryside (chosen by 4.4% of the participants) and the lake (which got 2.4% of the votes).
In conclusion
In short, we get it: the Italians to material goods. much prefer experiences, travel. And good thing, it comes to say.
