Summer, at theCatania airport, is particularly hot: and temperatures, although high, have very little to do with it. The 'problem', in this case, is. Mount Etna, which during the weekend that just ended gave no small show.
In this article:
During the night of August 3 to 4, increasing activity was recorded in the Voragine crater: volcanic tremor, ash cloud about 10 km high headed southeast and lava fountains; this is the 5th paroxysmal phase recorded by INGV, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, from July 4 to the present.

The ash rain not only created inconvenience for neighboring municipalities but, evidently, also for the Catania-Fontanarossa airport. Result: B1 sector of the airspace has been closed and incoming flights have been reduced to only 6 per hour.
Only late in the morning did the crater activity diminish and, consequently, the alert level was changed from red to orange: nevertheless, inconveniences for travelers were not few, with 7 hijacked flights (most in Comiso, the rest in Palermo) and 6 deleted.
