SAS's exit from Star Alliance was bound to make noise and triggering a small earthquake in the world of frequent flyer programs.
In this article:
In recent years we have seen few companies come out of an alliance, e.g. China Southern came out of Skyteam, but otherwise to "jump" were only comprimarios, never one of the founders and pillars like Scandinavian Airlines.
In recent months we have seen several Status Match campaigns, i.e., those commercial initiatives by which loyalty programs try to steal customers, nothing illegal is competition. On SAS's FFs they all jumped on it.
Lufthansa who didn't want to lose passengers On the northern European route, Finnair hoping to convince the orphans. of Star Alliance to try out oneWorld and Even Norwegian tried to entice Eurobonus users. For its part SAS has not stood by and watched and threw a hook to the passengers of its former alliance to ferry them to Skyteam. We had never seen an action like that launched by Star Alliance, though.
The first statusmatch of an Alliance
Star Alliance, which despite the exit of SAS remains the largest global airline alliance in the world, launched a status match for SAS EuroBonus members.
If you complete the challenge, SAS EuroBonus members can continue to enjoy the connectivity, benefits and perks that come with Star Alliance Silver and Gold status.
"When it comes to frequent flyer programs, customers in Northern Europe want the value that only Star Alliance can offer. They want to continue to experience seamless travel and superior status benefits with Star Alliance member airlines," said Renato Ramos, Vice President Corporate Strategy "Member airlines with a significant presence in Scandinavia are offering a lucrative status match opportunity. We anticipate it will be well received by our valued customers in the Nordic countries."
