New York's "new" St.Regis
Champalimaud Design Studio's plan calls for the new common areas of the St. Regis New York to take advantage of the hotel's design heritage and its original Beaux-Arts-style architecture: translated, this approach combines design elements from the past (e.g., Waterford crystal chandeliers and distinctive ceiling moldings) with a choice of modern furniture, layered textures, and a rich color palette.
"To create spaces full of energy and splendor, we created overlays between classical architecture and contemporary elements and infused the hotel with a magical atmosphere, just as the Astor family originally did," says Alexandra Champalimaud. "The common areas convey a feeling of openness, using a palette of emerald greens and reds that evoke the grandeur of the Astors' heritage."
Guests enter the St. Regis world through the (original) revolving doors and are welcomed into the iconic lobby, characterized by cool tones and modern décor. In addition, during renovations, the original exterior windows of the reception area were recovered and restored, including a stained glass window with the original 1905 Tiffany Room window design. In addition to this, the original infrastructure that housed the reception counter was restored and placed in the walls behind the reception area.
Guests at the St.Regis in New York will have access to a restaurant, the The Drawing Room, but also the renowned King Cole Bar, the most legendary meeting place in all of Manhattan. The real novelty, however, is the Maisonette: a bright and airy place, inspired by the hotel's original breakfast room from the 1910s, in which guests can enjoy breakfast as well as lunch and even afternoon tea.
