It may be because of a matter of patriotism. Or because Americans, when it comes to food, really have a taste all their own, incomprehensible to much of the rest of the world.
In this article:
The fact is. USA Today, Among the ten airlines in the world on whose planes you eat best, it included two that carry the Stars and Stripes flag. And already there would be reason to raise eyebrows.
But even the second (of eyebrows) is impossible not to raise it when In the top 10, it turns out one of the two Americans in question, Delta Airlines, is in fifth place, ahead of Turkish Airlines, Air France, Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

Practically a blasphemy, since, arguably, the four companies that ended up behind the U.S. carrier are the ones on which the world eats best.
The second American, United Airlines, USA Today had, at least, the decency to put it at the bottom of the Top 10.
Also in the ranking is ITA Airways Which, in the wake of Alitalia, also offers according to readers of the American tabloid (the ranking is called 'USA Today Reader's Choice Awards) one of the best 'restaurants in the clouds' in the world.

The Italian carrier placed fourth., behind Cathay Pacific and Korean Air (it can fit) and, hear ye, the first-place Air New Zealand (Raise your hand if you have ever heard that New Zealand cuisine is in any way renowned...).

However, that's how Americans see it... Speaking of ITA Airways, USA Today writes that "passengers will enjoy meals crafted by top Italian chefs. The menus are both traditional and sophisticated, on par with those dedicated to those with dietary restrictions. The menus vary and on each flight the options available also reflect the destination cuisine."
