Way earlier than usual, Marriott Bonvoy has announced the ways in which it will ensure a controlled decrease in status to its members who fail to renew their membership during 2024.
In this article:

Soft landing is the feature that some loyalty programs have, it is a parachute that allows one to climb one level above the status held.
How Marriott soft landing works in 2024
- Members who have achieved their existing elite status again in 2024 will have their current status renewed until February 2026
- Members who have not renewed their existing elite status in 2024 will be offered a level below their current status until February 2026. Members will see their new status in March 2025 and will be able to enjoy their existing status until February 2026.
- Members who achieved higher elite status in 2024. already have a state expiration date of February 2026.
Why soft landing is a real benefit

When reasoning about the benefits included in a status we often underestimate this parachute, but in life anything can happen. Not having to start from scratch, but to maintain a small or large recognition is a reason for me to reward those loyalty programs that offer it.
In conclusion

I find the soft landing a very important feature, too bad it is not as popular among loyalty programs, but a job change, a momentary problem, a sabbatical from travel can always happen, and having your status reset is not a pleasant thing.
Obviously, if you take advantage of the parachute, you will not have access to annual choice benefits, partly because these are triggered upon reaching certain nights stayed.
