Tactics is the one followed so far whenever one of the three major international alliances (Star, Oneworld and Skyteam) has opened its own lounge: Planting the 'flag' in a hub not really, that is, of none of the companies that are part of the alliance, and thus elevate the customer experience of passengers of those companies.
In this article:
The latest (in order of time) 'flag' planted it Star Alliance, which has opened its first lounge in Asia at Terminal 1 of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China. The airport is the main hub of China Southern Airlines, an airline that was in Skyteam for several years before leaving on December 31, 2019.
The Star Alliance lounge has an area of 750sqm and Is capable of simultaneously accommodating up to 100 passengers who have Star Alliance Gold status or are traveling in First or Business Class with one of the alliance airlines serving the airport: Air China, Asiana Airlines, Egyptair, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, Shenzen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Turkish Airlines, which together offer 774 weekly departures to 50 destinations located in 10 countries.
Along with the usual amenities (food stations, bar, work stations, toilets and showers), the hall, which is open 24/7 offers a tea tasting corner, which is a very renowned product of that region of China. Star Alliance has announced that it will open a second lounge, also in Guangzhou, when the airport's Terminal 3 is completed.
It will be, that, the seventh alliance lounge, After those opened in Amsterdam, in Buenos Aires, at Guangzhou Terminal 1 (precisely), in Rio De Janeiro, In Los Angeles (inside the Tom Bradley International Terminal). and to Paris (Terminal 1).
The latter was awarded (the latter) as the best lounge of an international alliance in the world at the 2024 Skytrax Awards. It is worth noting that none of the six airports are hubs of Star Alliance member companies.
Likewise, they are not hubs of companies belonging to Skyteam Vancouver (pictured above), Dubai, Sydney, Santiago de Chile and St. Paul's, where Skyteam has opened its lounges.
On this front, the alliance that has lagged somewhat behind the others is Oneworld, which has its own lounges at only two airports, Seoul Incheon e Amsterdam (pictured above), Who of course are not hubs of any of his companies.
