Starting this year, I decided to add a new category to my annual ranking TFCbest, that of hotels.
In this article:
During the year now drawing to a close, I spent more than 100 nights in hotels on 4 continents, mostly hotels that participate in hotel chains, but not only, although then I only do reviews of those where I think it makes sense to share the experience and a total of 50 reviews were published, basically one a week.
The rules are the same as the other TFCbest: I am talking about facilities that I have visited and reviewed firsthand, and there is no chance for the same winner to triumph in two different awards.
Best structure ever
I think there is little to discuss the best experience I have told this year is undoubtedly the one at the Mandapa Ritz Carlton Reserve in Ubud. In the heart of Bali I literally left my heart, this was one of those experiences that you can't wait to repeat, but in the end you already know you won't so as not to ruin the memory.
The stay in this corner of paradise was magical, unrepeatable and full of emotions. I recommend everyone to go there at least once in a lifetime and experience the same feelings we have.
The best experience with points
This is very recent and could only be the experience in the Presidential Suite at the W Hotel in Sydney. One of the most eagerly anticipated facilities in all of 2024, one of the world's most exciting signs in a location as unique as Darling Bay in the capital of New Wales.
Not only did we stay with the points, but Taking advantage of all the status benefits, we ended up in the best room in the hotel and not for a quick stay, but a full 3 nights in a row. Truly a hotel that deserves the hype that generated its opening and confirmed how the W sign Is among my favorites, difficult to be disappointed even though it sometimes happens even at these levels.
The best luxury category hotel
Here the victory, by exclusion, went to the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, DC. The former post office building recently passed from the Trump sign to the Hilton family. During our summer vacation we used Hilton Honors points to sleep one night in this hotel.
Again, upgrade to a super suite and 5-star treatment in all respects, great staff, small attentions even though we were overnight guests paying with points. There are many 5-star hotels in the American capital, but this one is really top.
The best budget category hotel
Here without hesitation I say that in Cambodia I discovered facilities far above my expectations. In the capital city of Phnom Pehn I have been twice and found two hotels of an intermediate brand that in the rest of the world would be definitely more highly rated. The winner, however, can only be one, and so I award the Courtyard that has a beautiful rooftop, a better position compared to Fairfield, but both played it out.
Superior rooms than what this sign usually offers in the old country or the U.S., a stocked lounge and a pool with a skyline view.
The "theft" of 2024
This time I am not talking about a reservation made with points, but a hotel paid cash. My first experience in an SLH, since this chain has joined the Hilton Honors family, it was a real surprise. The Angkor Village Hotel in relation to the price charged for my stay was, without a doubt, the bargain of the year.
Highly recommended to all those who plan to visit the ruins of Angkor and the city of Siem Reap. The former are worthwhile, the latter not at all.
Special mentions
From New York to Melbourne, from Bangkok to Milan, it is hard to remember all the good experiences I had during this 2024. Compared to last year I have not been to the Middle East or even South America, but as mentioned I have stretched to Australia. So here are my honorable mentions:
- A New York if you want to be in Times Square area the Motto Is, for cost/quality a facility to be carefully evaluated. To see all the hotels I reviewed in the city that never sleeps you can go here.
- A Singapore have opened several hotels and others changed signs. In my opinion. It's not worth the expense to sleep at Marina Bay just to take a dip in the pool, among the many hotels I recommend the smaller ones like the Vagabond
- In Bangkok, I lost count of the number of hotels I visited and reviewed.. Certainly the Waldorf Astoria and the Ritz Carlton are as affordable as hardly anywhere else in the world. I would, however, aim for mid-range facilities certainly the novelty is called Moxy, but it still costs a little bit too much so I would aim for two structures close together like Le Meridien and the Marriott Surawongse.
- Sleeping in a hotel near an airport is often essential, my favorite in Italy remains the Moxy Linate also because it is good not only for those who have to fly out of Milan, but what Matteo Legnani discovered in South Africa is not bad at all.
- After New York and Bangkok I think it's Tokyo the city where I reviewed the most hotels, among the many hotels I recommend to Ginza the Aloft, in Shinjuku the Hilton and to the Moxy in Kinshicho.
In conclusion
As always I am ready to take suggestions on places to visit, hotels to stay and experiences to have. For all this I await your suggestions for the next TFC Best.
