Since the first year of TFC, I decided to make my own personal rankings., a way to recount the best and worst experiences of the My year as a globetrotter around the world.
In this article:
Starting this year, I decided to add new categories in recent days I published the one of the hotels and now it's my turn to what for all intents and purposes is my second home: "airports." No presumption to compare myself to Skytrax, but just the desire to relate my personal experiences as a mere passenger.
As always, I refer to airports where I transited at least once during 2024: so the choice falls exclusively on these 72 airports.
The best airport in the world is Singapore Changi
Singapore Changi in my opinion no one beats him, no offense to the emirs of Qatar but Doha in my opinion the home of the best airline in the world does not deserve this crown. Changi has the Jewel, it has 4 terminals one more beautiful than the other (and soon to become 5) we are not just talking about stores and gates, but so many attractions designed to make the hours go pleasantly by between flights.
Every time I pass through this airport there is something new, there is a detail I had not noticed. Millions of passengers pass through here every year, but the size allows you to do so without fear of being squeezed by other passengers, the gates are spaced far apart but you get around easily thanks to the skytrain. Technology allows you to get in/out in minutes, and security checks at the gate eliminate the stress of standing in line 30 minutes outside the airport. For these and many other reasons SIN is the best airport in the world.
Europe's best airport is Helsinki
Again, in my opinion there is one winner that outperforms the competition and that is Helsinki Airport. Yes of course divisions by trades should be made, but it's not like they are TUV.
HEL is beautiful, uncluttered, and above all, it is people-friendly. Of course it doesn't have the traffic of London or Amsterdam, but that's why it wins. The passenger doesn't get lost between terminals, doesn't have to travel miles to get to the gate.
Italy's best airport is Rome Fiumicino
No doubt the prize is for Rome Fiumicino, certainly not perfect. The distances are great, the small and always overcrowded lounges. Fiumicino, however, is modern, easy to get around and above all, it offers the opportunity for passengers from all over the world to breathe in the history of the Eternal City. No airport in the world offers the chance to breathe in the history of the Eternal City,
The transformation it has undergone in these 5 years was really crazy, from the free fast track to connections to downtown, from the check-in service at the station, to the many spaces that allow the passenger to experience the moment of travel with less stress, now that perhaps even the long-standing issue of cabs has been resolved is certainly ready to face the Jubilee year in top form.
The worst airport in the world is the one in New Deli
There is no doubt that the worst of the worst is represented by the stopover in India's capital city. The explosive mix between the unwillingness to work of almost all the staff, the snootiness of the security officers, the total lack of respect for the rules of travelers, and the poor hygiene of the passengers who populate it, generates what in my opinion is by far the worst airport I have transited through during 2024.
I have been through as many as 6 times and I must say that no matter if you are a premium economy passenger of Vistara, First Class of Lufthansa or business of Air India you will always and still be treated like dirt, made fun of by people who pretend to talk to you (while they are probably taunting you). Then making it all the more tragicomic is the self-proclaimed "best Asia/Pacific airport" with banners, billboards, giant signs around the airport. Zero technology, endless queues, dirt everywhere, embarrassing food court. The only thing that is saved is the Encalm Privé, but it looks like a spaceship landed in the wrong place.
The worst airport in Europe is Madrid
The gap between Iberia's terminal4 and other buildings is embarrassing, for the series A-class passengers and then Z-class poor. Even in other airports there are big differences between terminals, but in this case it is not like Malpensa where one terminal houses only a low-cost, here all the non-oneWorld carriers use dilapidated facilities, where you have to walk for miles without even the shadow of a treadmill, security checks and gates stopped at the beginning of the millennium.
My least favorite thing is the low ceilings that make the environment almost claustrophobic, the exact opposite of what Iberia offers its passengers instead.
The worst airport in Italy is Malpensa
Of course there are those who might say but have you ever been to .... , the point is. if Fiumicino is the TOP, Malpensa is the FLOP. If one then compares with Linate the gap is even more incomprehensible. The gateway to northern Italy, the airport of the upcoming Milan/Cortina Olympics, is old and has not renewed itself, something that both Linate and Fiumicino have done. Every time you leave you have to travel miles, every time you land just as many and often more.
The lounges are sad, in the Schengen area then not enough to handle the influx of the many passengers. I'm sorry because given where I live it is definitely my "home airport", but it would so much need a makeover as happened at Linate.
Lots of news coming soon
In the coming years we will see a lot of new developments around the world. In New York the new JFK is taking shape. New T6 and T1 will open soon, ending years of inconvenience and will bring a long-awaited improvement to this airport. News to that in Dubai where construction has begun on the new airport, as news will come from Sydney to China where a new port of call will be built on an artificial island, but Will not be ready before 2035 So it still takes a little more patience.
Now I'm curious about your opinion, what are the best and worst airports you've been through over the years? write it in the comments.
