Finally I can say it, I AM an SAS millionaire.
In this article:
Of course I haven't yet received the congratulatory email from the company, much less received the points credit to my Eurobonus account, but what matters is that I received the credit to my account of the 15th qualifying flight, potentially one more to go, but it doesn't count since to reach the 1 million point prize it was necessary to Fly with at least 15 Skyteam carriers by Dec. 31.
Accredited the 15th flight, mission accomplished
Yesterday, about two hours after I posted the article where I explained the many difficulties I was experiencing, I received the longed-for notification. Immediately I also went to my account to check and when I saw that the accumulated points were over 31 thousand, I knew it was true, finally the 15th flight had been credited.
Of course the actual credited flights are more than 15, but What mattered were the vectors and finally there are: SAS, Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Aeromexico, Xiamen Air, China Eastern, Korean Air, China Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Kenya Airways, Saudia, KLM, Air Europa, Tarom, and Air France. Now I'm missing the accreditation still from Garuda Indonesia, but even if it doesn't come it won't spoil my party.
For once I am among the "lucky ones"
Online, many travelers are having no small amount of trouble, especially related to Non-qualifying ticket classes for the purposes of the challenge, a situation that created quite a few problems for me as well, but which for the avoidance of doubt I solved by flying business class on those routes where I was not certain to accumulate at least 1 point. Just the Air Europa flight was one of the most "risky" ones and that is why I preferred to spend 100€ more to fly business between Barcelona and Madrid, but a lot of users are having problems with Kenya Airways flight between Bangkok and Guangzouh and with Xiamen Airlines.
Anteo, one of the two Italians who, like me, went after the million miles, had problems with the Xiamen flight, the one where he almost stole my seat, and with Saudia. One of the guys I met on this tour had problems with Vietnam Airlines.
While the young Korean couple on their honeymoon misbooked a flight and, because they did not fly Aeromexico, they will have to settle for 100 thousand points each and a super original honeymoon instead of the million miles. This is to say. the missteps could have been multiple: flights canceled due to bad weather, missed connections, wrong tickets, and to all this was also added SAS's unpreparedness to handle so many users chasing the million.
It's not my first million, but it's special
The beauty of this "million" is that it has a completely different flavor from all the other points I have in my Frequent Flyer portfolio right now. It is special because I earned it in a short time and with relatively little expense.
Right now I have almost 1M FB points On my account, considering that between La Premiere and other flights, this year I burned about 400k points from this program. Same when I think of the Membership Rrewards points, I'm at about 3.5M and this year I burned about 1M, but fortunately there is the present a friend and From January 1, the hunt for 600k free points begins again.
Also in Hilton this year I exceeded 1M quota, but now I am slightly below that quota, I also could have increased the account thanks to the recent bonus launched by Amex, but I did not want to move anything to this program, while I'm still considering replenishing my Bonvoy account a little bit., which after vacations in Australia, is practically in the red.
The million Eurobonus points will be special precisely because it will be obtained without having sacrificed any other points, in a program that will allow me to redeem dozens of tickets to fly with the Scandinavian airline as well as all the other Skyteam carriers.
How much do award tickets with SAS cost
"Sorry bum, but is the game worth the candle?" this is the question I have received most often in these two months of hunting. The answer is yes, and I'm sure that all the users who bet on this challenge will know how to make the most of these points to achieve at least 3 to 4 times the return on investment.
It only takes 30k points plus about 50€ in taxes to fly in economy to the US. In business the same route costs 50k points.
No matter whether you want to fly to the East Coast or the West Coast, the price in Eurobonus miles is always the same and the availability of seats interesting.
With 30k points and less than 30€ tax I can fly economy to Japan, a ticket that I remember is flexible and also includes checked luggage, so a very important value that should not be compared to the cost of the cheapest possible ticket. Likewise, I will never waste 888,644 on a business class ticket, because then the value of my points would be very low.
In addition to this I have decided that I will aim to reach gold in the Eurobonus program, currently I am silver, this way I will be able to take advantage of a 10% discount on the issuance of award tickets. This means that an a/r in business class will cost me 90k and not 100k points. I am missing 15k qualifying points that I could do with a cash ticket in business between Europe and Asia.
300k miles will be used to fly TFC readers
I will launch a contest that will give away several prize tickets using at least 300k miles obtained from this challenge. Obviously before announcing the modalities I wait to see the loot credited to my account, because okay to celebrate first, but never promise if you don't have the certainty that you can keep your promise.
In conclusion
It was definitely an initiative that brought SAS so much good press., thousands of articles around the world, including in top media such as CNN, BBC and many others. Of course in Italy only we at TFC have been talking about it, but we know ours is not a country of frequent flyers. Now I can't wait to receive my "transfer" and start spending the little treasure, perhaps with the first review of SAS on the YouTube channel.
