In 2022 American Express had launched a new benefit dedicated to Holders of American Express Platinum or one annual discount of 300 euros at restaurants participating in the Global Dining network. An annual cashback of up to €150 for spending in Italian restaurants and as much around the world. The benefit had expired on December 31, 2024, and now an extension for two more years, until December 31, 2026, is official.

Now in the dedicated Amex Offers section on the American Express app, and website, the new offer has been uploaded, which as always must be activated before it can be used.
How restaurant discount changes for American Express Platinum Holders
The new discount is still €150 per year, but now it is split into two tranches and allows for immediate cashback of €75 per month every six months.
The validity periods are defined as follows:
- January 7-June 30, 2025 (up to a maximum of €75 discount);
- July 1-December 31, 2025 (up to a maximum of €75 discount);
- January 1-June 30, 2026 (up to a maximum of €75 discount);
- July 1-December 31, 2026 (up to a maximum of €75 discount).
Discount not enjoyed in the relevant validity period cannot be used in the next validity period. Beware because if the expenditure is made on the last day of a validity period, the transaction may not be recorded in the current validity period, so it is advisable to make the expenditure at least two days before the end of each validity period.
The promotion also remains the same for overseas spending, the discount is still €150, but divided into two tranches with the same deadlines.
In conclusion
Many will turn their noses up at this, because given the level of restaurants participating in Global Dining, it used to be much easier to write off a single €150 expense than two €75 ones. Especially for overseas travel it was much easier to locate a restaurant in New York or Sydney where you could make the transaction, now if you want to maximize this offer you will necessarily have to make two transactions in two distinct periods.
Personally, I won't tear my beard off; I have no problem admitting that I haven't used both benefits in the past two years, but I imagine it will be bad news for several users.
