Flying and Miles&More, from today are (almost) one: joint accumulation, award tickets and goodbye Skyteam

Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, just announced during the press conference presenting the marriage of ITA Airways with Lufhansa important news for all Italian frequent flyers, a real surprise that is effective from today, practically the two loyalty programs become one.
In this article:
ITA Airways will leave Skyteam by the end of May
The farewell to the Skyteam alliance will take place by the end of May, while entry into the Star Alliance will take place no earlier than early 2026. As expected then there will be a buffer period in which ITA passengers will be without an alliance, but this will not have an impact since the two programs Miles&More and Volare will be merged within a few months.
Miles&More and Volare now accrual shared
Passengers departing today on ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group flights will be able to opt to earn points on either loyalty program. In practice, frequent flyers will be able to credit flights on cards from now on regardless of the airline, of course only on LH group flights, not for other Star Alliance partners.
Volare points can be used to book Miles&More award tickets.
The bombshell, if I may use that term, is that starting immediately, that is, from today, February 3, members of the two loyalty programs will be able to use their accumulated points to redeem points to issue award tickets with both carriers. Currently the operation is the classic one of Volare, i.e. cash&points, but things should change in the coming months.
Volare status opens LH lounge doors
As of now, Italian frequent flyers will be able to take advantage of the benefits of this marriage, this means that their respective members will be able to benefit from each other's benefits, this means that they will have fast-track routes at airports, lounge access and priority access on board aircraft.
ITA Airways 'moves' to Lufthansa terminals from now on
The Italian airline immediately joins the LH group, which means that in the coming days AZ flights will be operated in the "beautiful" temrminal of airports where the group carriers operate.
Tickets bookable now via app on all LH Group carriers
Starting today, it is possible to book a ticket for a flight on board ITA or the other group airlines through the apps and sites of both ITA and Lufthansa, an integration that is already operational for flights in February 2025.
