All these years this hotel has always been on my wishlist, But what happened was that I ended up saying, "okay next time," this was finally the right time.
In this article:
In my perennial hunt for the best hotel in Bangkok, by far this is the city along with New York City where I have visited (and reviewed) the most hotels, I was finally able to spend two nights at the Marriott Sukhumvit in the capital of Thailand.
I don't want to be misunderstood, this is a review of the hotel and not just the bar on the 49th floor.
Reservation
Did you get your flight cancelled, miss your connection, land late?
You could get up to 600€ compensation per person
As usual booked via the app and took advantage of all possible promotions, specifically in addition to the global promo at the beginning of 2025, the one that gave away Double qualifying nights and 1,000 bonus points for each night stayed, I also took a discount of 25%. The price is not cheap, but in terms of hotel type and service it is definitely in line with what facilities of this level offer in Bangkok. In the end, two nights cost me about 130€ each.
Location
The Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit is located in a Strategic location in the vibrant Thonglor district, along Sukhumvit Road. Within walking distance of BTS Thong Lo station, offers easy access to the city's main attractions, restaurants and nightlife.
Wanting to walk you can safely get to the EMSphere area., one of the newest and most interesting shopping centers in the city, but of course thanks to the BTS you can easily get anywhere.
Check-in
I arrived directly from the airport, fortunately the traffic was not hellish, landing in BKK in the early afternoon is really the ideal time. Few flights coming in, immigration unloaded, few people lined up for a grab, and little understood traffic. Translated I got off the plane at 2:58 p.m. and by 4:04 p.m. I was in the room.
I did not want to use my NUA for this reservation., I was willing to see what fate would have in store for me, and I finally got the classic "fake" upgrade, That is, an executive room on a high floor, but not very high. I have explained it several times, free room upgrades are not necessarily imperial suites, indeed they are often a window to a better view and little more.
The room
Average room, here the originality was all concentrated in the placement of the bathroom, which was taking up one whole side of the room. Obviously with the possibility of closing the wall
Basically the room runs the length of the room, as does the bathroom. Each room has its own window, and in my case the window was Sukhumvit view, and especially Tichuca view perhaps the most Instagrammed rooftop bar of the moment.
King bed, sofa and work area very functional. Perfect mattress and topper, as was the choice of pillows.
Room facilities absolutely in the norm, I appreciated that the minibar was stocked, certainly nothing comparable to the W Hotels in Bangkok, but let's say it was not the classic Desert of the Tartars.
Protagonist of the bathroom, or bath room, was definitely the large circular tub positioned under the window.
Reduced disposable plastic, almost to a minimum, and large bathroom with the shower inserted in the same room that houses the tub, but separate.
The hotel
This hotel is just over 10 years old, opened in 2013, has 296 rooms and suites, spread over 42 floors.
The Marriott Sukhumvit offers. three main restaurants: the 57th Street, where breakfast is served; the District Grill Room & Bar, an upscale steakhouse specializing in fine meats and wines; and Octave Rooftop Lounge & Bar, a multi-level rooftop restaurant-bar located between the 45th and 49th floors, famous for its cocktails and breathtaking views of the Bangkok skyline.
The ground floor also houses a very colorful cafeteria and a stylish bar.
Executive Lounge
One of the most important advantages for me is definitely the ability to enjoy the lounge, not only because here I can eat and drink for free at all hours (or almost), but because I can take advantage of this environment to work and also meet clients, friends always at no cost.
The lounge is not the best in Bangkok, that to date remains the lounge of the Marriott Marquis, But the food and wine proposal, on the other hand, was very satisfying. Open daily from 6:30 am for breakfast. You can enjoy a selection of hot and cold drinks all day long.
Afternoon tea is served from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. The dinner buffet starts at 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and offers a selection of complimentary cocktails, wines, juices and soft drinks. Obviously I don't recommend breakfast in the lounge, but I must say that the offerings were restricted, but not sacrificed as elsewhere.
Gymnasium, Pool and SPA
The wellnes area is all concentrated on the 7th floor of the facility, basically occupying the top floor of the small structure that stands at the foot of the tower that houses the rooms and apartments.
The pool is not huge, but in all these hotels it is about the same size, only the Conrad stands out with a decidedly more generous proposal.
Much larger gymnasium, partly because running around Bangkok is not the easiest thing to do both because of the weather conditions and the traffic and risks to pedestrians.
The rooftop
First of all, it is not a rooftop, but it is 3 different rooms on 3 different floors.
On the 45th floor of the hotel is the Attic restaurant, perfect location for dinner with a spectacular view of Thailand's capital city.
You can take the elevator, or go up the stairs to the 47th floor and get to the second soul of the Octave. Here is the Monkey 47 bar with the "less wow" view, but you are still almost on the roof of Thailand.
Reaching the top floor you arrive at one of Bangkok's best-known and most popular rooftops: the Octave. In the center is a circular bar in front of the DJ console, with a view of the other rooftop in the area and lots of small tables. This proposal exceeds that of the Marriott Surawongse located in the Patpong district.
Breakfast
Hard to be disappointed by a breakfast in Asia, of course in the end they all look more or less alike also because there is so much competition, so you have to keep the bar high, trying to have that cue that convinces the customer to choose this hotel over another.
Several islands with express cuisine, flavors from every corner of the world, and attention to those with special dietary needs as well. Widely promoted and valuable support to start the day around Bangkok With the right amount of energy.
In conclusion
I would go back. I recommend it to everyone, maybe not to those who have children since the pool is not that big and there's no area for them to let off steam, but for everyone else it's really top to have one of the most sought-after rooftops 5 floors above your bedroom.
