ITA Airways' integration into Lufthansa galaxy takes decisive step forward, Miles&More the German loyalty program has just launched a Status Match campaign targeting a small group of frequent flyers, Italian and others, who hold an elite card in the Volare program.
In this article:
It was in the air, but I honestly didn't think it would come in this manner and, even though I am about to say something that will be unpopular, I say that the modalities of this initiative are the correct ones although many will say "eh, but I was left out."
Status Match Miles&More who will not be able to apply for it
I don't like to make unnecessary turns of phrase or even put the important news at the end of the article, so Let's get this out of the way now and list who will not be able to take advantage of this promotion.
- Those who did not achieve status in the field in 2024
- Who has the premium status given by an executive
- Those who have obtained the status since February 1, 2025
- Who owns the Executive status forever
If you fall into these types of users you can stop your reading here, you are not among the profiles that will be able to apply for status match to Lufthansa's Miles&More program.
#spoileralert attempting the call center card will not lead to a different result, the rules are clear and there is no room for interpretation, but if you think you have been excluded by mistake you can always give it a try
Status Match Miles&More: the rules for applying for it
This initiative deservedly rewards only and only those who have achieved status by flying or spending with ITA Airways American Express cards During the course of 2024.
The validity period is from April 22 to June 10, 2025 and to activate the procedure you need to log in to your restricted area.
Basically, if you have benefited from the continuous ex officio renewals by Volare, Miles&More is telling you that the manna is over and that one must conform to the strict rules of the German frequent flyer.
Conversely, the conversion is what we had come to know by now:
- If you are Plus you will get the Frequent Traveller level., which corresponds to Star Alliance silver and gives access to LH Group business lounges around the world.
- If you are Premium or Executive you will get the Senator level, card that is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold and thus opens the doors to Senator Lounges and all Star Alliance lounges worldwide
Status Match Miles&More: how to apply for it
If you are eligible to apply for match status, it means that in the next few hours, When you enter your personal area on Volare., you should see the new entry to activate the procedure.
It is very important to know that the master data will have to match perfectly. According to what I have learned the procedure will be manual and validated user by user, ergo it will NOT be immediate or even fast. Let's say it could be a couple of weeks between request and actual match.
Status Match Miles&More: how long will the status last
Obviously, this opportunity applies to those who have a lower level in Miles&More than that possessed in ITA Airways.
As of today, all Volare cards expire on December 31, 2025, the program's expiration date, so all Miles&More cards resulting from this status match will have the same duration only extended until February 2026, which is the current expiration of all current Mile&More cards.
Status match Miles&More: you must do it, but you must not make this mistake
You are among the deserving and have the opportunity to apply for this status match? then do it, but be careful not to get sucked in or do the math right. Get a good understanding of the strategy you need to adopt, because if you don't set the goal well, you risk being left holding the bag.
I have explained this in many articles And also in a live broadcast: obtaining status in the Miles&More program is 100 times more complicated than obtaining status in Volare.
Do you understand the concept well? to become a senator you must accumulate 2000 qualifying M&M points, 1000 of which are done by flying LH (i.e. Lufthansa, Swiss, ITA, Brussels, Austrian), this means a minimum of 5 intercontinental business class round-trip tickets.
So the bum's advice is if you can do it, do it. This way you will immediately get Gold Star Alliance privileges if, between now and the end of the year, you fly on board the companies of this alliance. There are not even the usual "contraindications" require this MS will not prohibit a possible second one in the coming months, so make it #senzatimore.
But if you fly ITA or Lufthansa you must continue to accumulate on Volare to renew your premium status by the end of 2025 and the reason is quickly stated making the 60,000 qualifying Flying points is an outing compared to climbing Miles&More's Everest.
#spoileralert It's a foregone conclusion then that in late 2025 there will be an entirely similar initiative to complete the transition from Flying to Miles&More, of course it's my guess, but it's perfectly in line with current behavior
Take M&M status and get ready for more status matches
As we saw last year when SAS Scandinavian had exited Star Alliance to join Skyteam, there will be plenty of alternative status match opportunities. I am curious to see if Skyteam Will respond to Star Alliance by launching an "alliance" opportunity Giving the user the opportunity to choose the card he or she prefers.
How to climb Volare and secure status until 2027
Here of course we are in the realm of my assumptions, but let's say that to date I have got almost all of them right. If this initiative is replicated in late 2025, it is clear that Obtaining status with Volare by the end of the year will allow the card to be tracked in the German FF until February 2027.
Then we will have to like the Miles&More rules. and understand that no credit card gives status in the German program; there are no shortcuts or multipliers. This will mean that those who have enjoyed easy renewals will have to learn to do the math and prepare to struggle in 2026 to continue to have the privileges such as lounges, fast track and all the rest.
In conclusion
Excellent initiative by M&M and Volare, a way to give passengers cover at this stage of lack of an alliance. However, my advice is to continue to accumulate on Flying as long as it is possible as long as the status is a necessity and not something that you will then not exploit
