At this time, staying in New York is a very expensive experience. Since on The Flight Club we review hotels, flights and lounges, we've been to the Big Apple a dozen times, and since 2021 prices have only gone up.
In this article:
Of course, traveling in the off-season, especially after the holiday season and before Valentine's Day, helps save money. In fact, during this period, hotels, restaurants and Broadway shows offer attractive promotions.
For our challenge, I chose two strategically close but very different hotels. Giulia and Andrea stayed at the Graduate on Roosevelt Island, while Andrea and I opted for the SpringHill Suites in Queens.
I chose this facility because of its location and, most importantly, because of its lower price than the 90$. Considering that all hotels under this banner also include free breakfast, turned out to be a perfect solution for an inexpensive stay in New York City.
Reservation
As always, Booking through the app allows you to get all the benefits of the Bonvoy loyalty program. Also, at the beginning of the year, global promotion allowed to accumulate double qualifying nights and 1,000 bonus points for each night's stay, and since Andrea Chiovelli and I we were in two rooms I also accumulated points from his reservation.
Location
We are located in Queens, so not on the island of Manhattan. However, to get to Fifth Avenue just take the subway: in less than four stops you will be in the heart of the Big Apple.
A great advantage of this hotel is the Proximity to the F line, which connects directly to Jamaica station. From there, with the AirTrain, you can conveniently reach any terminal at JFK Airport.
In addition, the station is equipped with escalators, a detail not taken for granted in New York City, which makes it easy to move around with luggage. It is less than an eight-minute walk from the hotel: granted, Queens does not have the same context as Midtown, but it is an acceptable compromise for those who want to save money on lodging.
Check-in
The building houses two Marriott Group signs: in addition to the SpringHill Suites, there is also a Residence Inn, with which it shares common areas. Check-in was quick, and within minutes we were already in our rooms on the sixth floor.
Room
For a facility in this category, I was surprised by the overall quality. The hotel is newly built and can be seen in every detail.
The room had everything needed, including a partial view of the New York skyline, a luxury that is often sold as an upgrade downtown.
In addition to a comfortable bed, there were: a desk with a work area, a small sofa, a kitchenette with a microwave oven, a minibar, and a small closet. The only lack was the kettle, but otherwise there was much more than I expected.
Modern bathroom with shower, not always taken for granted in this category.
In addition, a large television, high-performance Wi-Fi, and, as mentioned, a window overlooking the lights of Manhattan.
The hotel
The only real weakness is the number of elevators: three are not enough to handle the flow of guests, especially at breakfast time. On the ground floor are:
The breakfast restaurant
Couches for relaxing or waiting for a cab,
A small pantry with snacks and drinks.
A gymnasium
The lavender area.
Two PCs for working while standing.
Breakfast
All guests, regardless of Bonvoy status, are entitled to free breakfast. Economically, this is a significant savings, especially for families or single travelers.
Admittedly, it is not a luxurious buffet, but there is nothing lacking: scrambled eggs, waffles, fruit, cereal, and everything you need to start your day with energy.
In conclusion
Sleeping in New York for less than 90$ per night seems like a mirage. Granted, this is not Manhattan, but this hotel turned out to be a good choice.
And if you don't want to walk too far, with the money saved on breakfast you can always take an Uber or Lyft to commute comfortably to the city center.
