Summer vacation is meant to relax, theoretically. But this is not always the case; in fact, they often become a nightmare.
In this article:
In recent years tourist flows, to increasingly popular and popular destinations, have created the stress effect, due precisely to a strong overtourism.
When you visit en masse a city, a coastal resort, or any other tourist site follows. chaos, traffic, queues, long waiting times (at the airport and beyond), inconvenience. In short, anything but relaxation, silence and enjoyment of a moment free.
Venice for example-among the most striking cases-in order to combat tourist overcrowding, it has decided to introduce, starting in April 2024, an access fee for day visitors on the busiest days, with mandatory online booking, designed precisely to regulate incoming flows.
But now it seems that Italians are getting smart and are starting to choose destinations that are always more exotic and unusual, and for this reason (even) less frequented, as reported in a recent Skyscanner ranking., according to which the first place among the most sought-after destinations for Italians is Seam Reap, in Cambodia and in second place instead. Uyuni, in Bolivia.
So where should you go to relax and enjoy a vacation without risking suffering the sandwich effect, crushed among a thousand other tourists?
According to Evaneos, a platform expert in responsible tourism, which conducted research to identify less crowded destinations, you should target these countries in the summer:
- at Finland where you can celebrate Juhannus, the longest day of the year when in most regions the sun never sets. On the agenda: 24 hours of light, bathing in lakes, unspoiled nature, traditional music and meeting friends around a bonfire.

2. in the Baltic countries, recommended for those who want to leave the beach to others to discover some of Europe's most fascinating capitals, perhaps by train, taking in breathtaking scenery and discovering a new world at each stop.

3. Finally in Madagascar: Embark on an off-season trip that smacks of discovery. Summer corresponds to the off-season in Madagascar and is the perfect time to meet the inhabitants of the capital and immerse yourself in daily life, away from the beaten track.

Evaneos also analyzed the 41 destinations who have recorded Less than 30% of international arrivals in the third quarter of the year.
These include. Cuba, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Brazil, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Cape Verde. However, many of these destinations see higher attendance in the winter months: this is the case of the Sri Lanka, which concentrates 38% of international arrivals in the first quarter, with a peak of 13% in February alone.
Although this distribution can be partly explained by the more favorable weather conditions at the beginning of the year, the concentration of tourism in narrow periods generates a new form of seasonal pressure and dependence. A more equitable distribution of flows throughout the year, taking into account the different seasons, would reduce the concentration of tourists in a few months while promoting a more authentic travel experience.
Some countries already have a more balanced distribution: the Vietnam, for example, records 23.3%, 24.8%, 27.3% and 23.4% of arrivals in the four quarters of the year, respectively; the Malaysia shows similar data, with an almost even distribution. Nevertheless, the road to true diversification and seasonal adjustment is still a long one.
