It is now official: we anticipated it in recent days, now it is reality. Seattle and Rome will finally be connected with a direct Alaska Airlines-branded flight for the first time in history.
In this article:
The American carrier announced today that it will add the Italian capital to its network of international destinations departing from the new global gateway Seattle-Tacoma Airport (SEA). Tickets for this long-awaited route will be available starting in the fall, when sales officially begin.

Rome will be the company's first destination in the old continent. The carrier also specified that Fiumicino airport was chosen not only for its symbolic and touristic value, but also for its operational efficiency. It is one of the few airports in Europe to receive the SkyTrax 5-star rating.,
Italian CEO's dream

"Connecting Rome nonstop from Seattle is a dream come true," said Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Airlines. "As an Italian American with parents who emigrated from Italy, this new route has very special personal meaning for me."

Minicucci pointed out that Rome had long been one of the most popular destinations for frequent flyers in the Mileage Plan program, and that this connection represents a further expansion of Alaska Airlines' global network from its main West Coast base of operations. "Let's go - let's go!", he concluded enthusiastically.
Direct flight Rome/Seattle: the schedule
The Seattle-Rome route will be operated four times a week, with the following operations (since tickets are not yet on sale and there are still 11 months to go, they could also change:
| Route | Departure | Arrival | Days | Aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seattle - Rome | 18:00 | 13:45 (+1) | Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday | Boeing 787-9 |
| Rome - Seattle | 15:45 | 18:00 | Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday | Boeing 787-9 |
The flight will be operated with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the same one also used for the new intercontinental routes to Tokyo Narita (already operating since May 12) and Seoul Incheon (starting September 12). The aircraft will be in Hawaiian livery and is outfitted in two classes: business with new suites and economy with one of the most modern products on the market.
Alaska Airlines' vision: a new bridge between the Pacific and the Mediterranean

With this announcement, Alaska Airlines reinforces its three-year "Alaska Accelerate" plan, designed to generate $1 billion in profit after its merger with Hawaiian Airlines. The route to Rome represents the third intercontinental destination departing Seattle with widebody aircraft.
"We are extremely proud that Alaska Airlines has chosen Rome as its first European destination," said Ivan Bassato, Chief Aviation Officer of Aeroporti di Roma. "This decision confirms the strategic importance of our airport as a global hub for connectivity."

Interested parties can already register at alaskaair.com/rome to get on the priority list that will allow you to be among the first to buy tickets, as soon as they become available this fall. For us Italians, this could be an interesting way to fly to Hawaii, thanks to the Seattle hub and the entire network to the islands in the Pacific or to Alaska.
