In this article:
If you stay in hotels, even occasionally, understanding how Bonvoy works can make all the difference. In this guide, we explain. step by step everything you need to know.
Introduction to Marriott and the Bonvoy program

Marriott is one of the giants of the global hotel industry, with over 8,000 hotels distributed in more than 130 countries. Its portfolio includes almost 40 brand different, from the exclusive luxury of St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton to more affordable solutions like Moxy or Four Points.
The loyalty program Marriott Bonvoy allows you to accumulate points with each stay and level up by earning increasing benefits: room upgrades, free breakfast, lounge access, award nights, and more. Membership is free and worthwhile for even one trip per year.
Status levels: how they work

Marriott Bonvoy is structured in six levels:

- Member: is the basic level, active from the time of enrollment.
- Silver Elite (10 nights): access to minimum benefits, such as 10% bonus points and late check-out on request.
- Gold Elite (25 nights): early upgrades, extended late check-out (not guaranteed), 25% bonus points.
- Platinum Elite (50 nights): lounge access, free breakfast, guaranteed late check-out, upgrade also to suite.
- Titanium Elite (75 nights): same benefits as Platinum with higher priority and second Annual Choice Benefit.
- Ambassador Elite (100 nights + 23.000$ spent): personal ambassador, personalized benefits and the "Your24" service.
The more qualifying nights you accumulate in a calendar year, the higher your status - and the better the benefits. From the level Gold Elite starts to really change the way you experience a Marriott stay. Here's what you get:
Gold Elite (25 nights)
- 25% of bonus points
- Free upgrades (excluding suites)
- Late check-out until 2:00 p.m. (if available)
- Free premium Wi-Fi
This is the level you get as a Holder of American Express Platinum and you keep it without any requirement as long as you remain a holder.
Platinum Elite (50 nights)

- 50% of bonus points
- Upgrades included suite
- Free access to executive lounges
- Free breakfast at many brands
- Late check-out guaranteed until 4:00 p.m.
- Annual Choice Benefit (e.g., 5 Suite Night Awards)
- Welcome gift on arrival (points or credit)
Titanium Elite (75 nights)

- 75% of bonus points
- Higher priority for upgrades
- Room availability guarantee up to 48h before
- Second Annual Choice Benefit
Ambassador Elite (100 nights + $23,000)

- Dedicated personal ambassador
- Program Your24: you choose check-in and check-out time
- Dedicated VIP treatment
Focus #1: The free breakfast at Marriott hotels.
La free breakfast is included Platinum Elite level and up, but only in some brands. It is not provided in the luxury brands such as Ritz-Carlton, Edition or Design Hotels, nor in residence hotels with self-contained kitchens.
Where it is instead guaranteed (with lounge access or directly in the restaurant), we find brands such as Marriott, Sheraton, Delta, Le Méridien, Westin, Autograph Collection and the like.
Some hotels offer a credit Food & Beverage (e.g., $10-25) instead of full breakfast: it is important to check on a case-by-case basis.
Focus #2: the guaranteed late check-out for Bonvoy elites
The late check-out until 4:00 p.m. Is one of the most useful benefits for travelers.
The important thing to know is. is not just "if available":
✔️ For those with status Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador, è guaranteed in all participating hotels.
✔️ Must be requested (at check-in or via app), but cannot be denied.
✔️ The only exception are excluded brands such as Marriott Vacation Club or Ritz-Carlton Reserve.
Who has status Gold Elite, on the other hand, can only hope for availability: no obligation on the part of the hotel.
Only qualifying nights count toward status

Not every night carries you forward toward Elite status. Only those defined count qualifiers, that is:
- Book directly On the Marriott website/app or via call center
- Award nights (booked with points)
- Free nights given away by co-branded Marriott credit cards
They do not count:
- Reservations via Booking, Expedia or other OTAs
- Corporate stays managed by third parties
- Bartered or contracted off-circuit reservations
What are Annual Choice Benefits
When you reach 50 or 75 nights in a year, you can choose a annual benefit personalized:
To 50 nights (Platinum):
- 5 Nightly Upgrade Awards
- Gift the Silver card to a friend
- 40% discount on Marriott mattress
- Charitable donation
- 5 nights elite extra

At 75 nights (Titanium):
- Free Night Award (value up to 40,000 points)
- More package of 5 Nightly Upgrade Awards
- Gift the Gold card to a friend
I have my own strategy by now: I'll take 5 NUA with the first gift and a prize night With the second.
Lifetime status
Marriott Bonvoy allows you to get lifetime status If you have accumulated a sufficient number of consecutive nights and years with active status:

- Silver for life: 250 nights + 5 years Silver or higher
- Gold for life: 400 nights + 7 years Gold or above
- Platinum for life: 600 nights + 10 years Platinum or higher

Once achieved, it no longer expires. Needless to say, that is my goal and I am doing everything to get to platinum for life.
How many points you accumulate and how to take advantage of promos
Point accumulation depends on the brand and your status:
- Base: 10 points for each $1 spent (in most hotels) +10-75% bonus based on the status
- Eligible expenses: room rate, restaurants, spa, extras billed to the hotel
Some brands such as Element, Residence Inn or Four Points Flex damage only 5 points per dollar.
In addition, Marriott frequently launches seasonal promotions, you need to sign up for promotions directly from the app or site, otherwise they do not activate.
How to use points
Bonvoy points can be used in many ways:
- Award nights in hotel
- Room Upgrade
- Marriott Bonvoy Moments Experiences
- Gift card or purchases on partner shops
- Transfer to airlines
Booking nights with points is easy and without blackout dates: you can choose a night from about 5,000 points (based on the dynamic rate).
The fifth night for free
When you book with the points, every 5 nights you pay only 4: the fifth is free. It is valid only for consecutive stays in the same hotel e all booked with points.
It is one of the best ways to maximize value of your points, especially in mid-range hotels or during promotions.
Transfer points to airlines
You can convert Marriott Bonvoy points into. airline miles of over 40 companies, admittedly not the most convenient way ever, but often a way to use points if you have no interest in booking award rooms. The partner companies are almost all of them, including:
- Lufthansa Miles&More
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue
- British Airways Avios
- Emirates Skywards
- American Airlines AAdvantage
The base rate is: 3 points Marriott = 1 mile But every time you transfer 60.000, receive 5,000 bonus miles. Example: 60,000 points → 25,000 miles Avios
Cross benefits with airlines
Marriott Bonvoy has special partnerships with some companies; there are benefits that are triggered upon attaining status and other benefits that are instead triggered by dedicated promotions, for example:

- United Airlines: reciprocal status (Bonvoy Titanium ↔ United Premier Silver)
- Air Canada: reciprocal status (Bonvoy Titanium ↔ 25k)
- Emirates Skywards: accumulate miles and points at the same time
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer: similar partnership, ideal for flights in Asia
A big plus for frequent flyers: you can optimize both the stay and the flight.
In conclusion
If you want to start using Bonvoy or take your status to the next level, Knowing these rules is essential. It's not just a points program-it's an ecosystem of benefits designed to make every stay more convenient, rewarding, and tailored.
